Santo Domingo.- National Police chief Rafael Guzmán yesterday said thanks to the patrols of about 15,000 agents criminal actions have fallen significantly in the days prior to Christmas, a time of the year when burglaries, holdups and assaults rise. "Thanks to God and to the operation ‘Christmas with orden' everything is calm and nothing has occured."

The official praised the citizenship of which he said handled itself with much prudence. "Apparently the thugs are also in a period of reflection, because normal things have only taken place which happen every day, but no misfortune."

Guzmán said he hopes for the new year 2008 " expectations are relaunched so the success of each Dominican can culminate with well-being."

why is it that nobady says anything about this agents stopping you to ask for money. In my opinion, that´s the same as burgglers. No..... It´s like terrorists, cause they actually use their uniform and position to scare you, and then ask you for money.

It's a cover-up! If no one reports extortion by police then maybe .... the crimes do NOT exist. The above noted crimes usually happen to tourist & poor Dominicans without a voice so, according to the RD Gov it does not matter.

I wrote on 12/20/07 about a drug dealer from the Pichardo brothers gang in Santiago who went on a shooting rampage in the poor barrio of Ensanche Caonabo (Los Platanitos). The gunman goes by the street name of "Choppo" but real first name of Jose Annibal who made a victim of an innocent by-stander who is a teenage boy and also a near victim of a 14 year old girl. The police were notified but said it was drug problem should be reported to DNCD but theses agents said that it was a gun crime thus the police should deal with it. In the end, niether came and thus the crime is un-reported while the poor barrio citizens live in extreme fear!

Since, I know the true reality, it is always sickening to read Police press releases to make them selves feel good!
