SANTO DOMINGO. - The Justice Minister said on Monday he agrees with a disarmament of the civilian population, though partially, and for the military and Law enforcement to meticulously investigate any person who requests a gun permit, and to seize them from those who carry them illegally.

Although he didn’t specify when such disarmament would begin, Radhames Jiménez said he agrees with the various sectors who’ve come forth to comment on the several bloody crimes involving guns in the last few days.

The leaders of the various denominations of churches and Supreme Court Chief Justice Jorge Subero have proposed that the authorities take the guns away from civilians.

Taking away guns of civilians who legally own them will be another failure (i.e. beer tax). The government over reacts. The civilians are NOT the problem but it is the know criminals with guns who the RD officials have records on but DO NOTHING!

We called both the DNCD & Santiago police about thugs with illegal guns in Los Platanitos of Santiago. But.. the police never arrived so, how will officials take the guns when they are too lazy to manage criminals (not civ

So why should I retire to the DR? Take away my guns and the police will protect me? I do not think so. No law passed in the DR will be respected by the criminal class. No one likes gun crime or any other crime. So your solution is to disarm the victums. How nice. How about we do not turn the DR into North America? Works for me thank you.

Why disarm the population when the criminals will still be armed. just another reason not to retire in the D.R. Until the rule of law applies to all I will never think of living there.

Both white collar and violent (strong arm) crimes are out of control. There are police and military staff losing their side arms daily (5-7 firearms each day) as criminals are taking them away from them. The DR is no longer a place for foreigners to retire as they are not safe. No one is safe. The political culture is so corrupt, there needs to be a total reform in order for a newer safer DR to emerge. No firearm means no safety...regardless..
