SANTO DOMINGO.- United States president George W. Bush said on Thursday he would veto a legislation approved by Congress that threatens to decimate the tobacco industry in Central America and Dominican Republic.

The measure includes a proposal to expand a public health program for the children of his country, already ratified by the House of Representatives and the Senate, at the democrats’ insistence.

"Democrats in Congress have decided to approve a bill which they know will be vetoed," said Bush, who asked the lawmakers to approve "a clean and temporary extension" of the program as it currently functions, so it wouldn’t affect the tobacco industry of that region, which in Dominican Republic’s case employees as many as 50,000 workers.

As one of the main sources of financing for the expansion of the health coverage, the democrat-sponsored bill raises taxes on tobacco products.

In Dominican Republic’s case, the expensive handmade cigars would be taxes as much as three dollars each.

Dominican Republic president Leonel Fernandez on Tuesday asked the Congress not to approve the tax, as it would harm people and the rural economies of his country, Honduras, Nicaragua and “tobacco zones in particular." He said a tax rise would cost his country 50,000 jobs.

I respect the Prez GWB position, he is a strategic thinking (even if I do not agree with everything). He is clear on his position of support and using his veto power to carry that out in the best interests of the RD.

My question is now, why can we (USA) get the same level of support from the RD?

How long have I been writing & complaining directly to authorities about drug dealers in Santiago barrios like Los Platanitos (Ensanche Caonabo) BUT NOTHING GETS DONE BY THE RD GOV! Incredible!

Understand that this promised veto has nothing to do with protecting the DR tobacco industry. Bush could not care less. He believes that if he is to have any one thing that can be remembered about his DISASROUS 8 years in office that is not negative, it will be that he never raised taxes. He is simply promising to veto a tax bill. If that bill helped the DR he would still veto it.

Hey JD if the USA didnt have such a taste for the drugs there would not be any customers and the DR would not have these drug problems you speak of.
I have been visiting for years and worked in Punta Cana and yes drugs are more available now then 10years ago

Stop blaming the American Government for DR's problems. It's time Dominicans started accepting responsibility for their lack of action and hold their own politicians and government responsible.
