SANTO DOMINGO. – The Dominican Public Health authorities said today the bird flu detected in Higüey linked to cockfight roosters, which prompted Haiti and Puerto Rico to ban the import of chickens and eggs from the country, has been controlled.

Public Health Bautista Rojas said its scientists and epidemiologist have combed places where they suspect the virus’ presence and the slaughter of numerous cockfight hens and roosters is another measure the authorities have taken.

The official, interviewed during a tour of the facilities which will serve as the Darío Contreras Hospital’s emergency room, discarded the shuttering of cockfight arenas as a way to control the spread of the disease.

It's nice to see at least one government doing something about this problem. There's many things you can say about the article joop2 posted... It's so easy for Haiti to critisize when there has been ZERO effort on this side to check if the Flu is already here.

IM GLAD TO HEAR THAT BC I JUST RECENTLY MOVED OUT HERE AND HEARD ABOUT THE EPIDEMIC AND WAS AFRAID TO EAT MEAT. I WAS ON THE VERGE OF BECOMING A VEGAN. I STILL DON'T FEEL SAFE EATING THE MEAT HERE. ANY ADVICE FROM BOTH WORLDS?
