Plane suspected of carrying drugs was allegedly ditched along the southeast coast.
SANTO DOMINGO.- The deputy (FNP-Santiago) Jose Ricardo Taveras today asked the Senate to pass a bill authorizing the downing of aircraft which violate Dominican airspace to traffic with drugs.
He said the U. S. embassy’s objection to the legislation on the downing of airplanes dedicated to drug traffic lacks merit, with the argument that commercial aircraft could be destroyed. "The initiative which we drafted together to Pelegrín Castillo anticipates all measures to prevent that occurrence. For that reason we don’t understand the North American position in the note from its diplomatic mission."
Taveras said neither the people nor the Government can be "handcuffed" agaisnt drug traffickers’ attacks, who use Dominican Republic as bridge for "its criminal activity."
He said the United States warning that it would suspend economic aide to the country if that paragraph isn’t stricken from the piece is "disproportionate." "That position of the diplomatic delegation appears dual, because the government of the United States supported legislations in Colombia and Peru for the downing of airplanes for drug trafficking."
Taveras noted that the U.S. doesn’t provide enough assistance in airplanes, boats and other equipment to fight drug traffickers.
Several weeks ago the deputy Rafael Molina Lluberes (PRSC-Sanchez Ramirez) submitted a resolution requesting of the U.S. increase aide including radars, airplanes, helicopters and speedboats to fight drug trafficking, which is "unfortunately covering the country."

The only explanation to such attitude from the US government is that somebody high in the chain is getting some benefits from the drug traffic situation or somebody connected to the US government is conducting some illegal activities on the dominican territories.
or maybe they are wory their spy planes may me shut down :-)

You watch too much TV. Probably worried that the DR in their wisdom would shoot down the wrong planes and since this is the gang that can't shoot straight I would have to agree.
They will probably use the DRivers of the Metro to fly and shoot down the drug planes and hit something else:)

If the "DR" shot down the IMF, World Bank, and the IADB planes, then the "DR" would do the whole world a great service, for these flights are certainly suspicious.

Insteaad of shooting these "traffickers" for violating Dominican airspace, why not force them to land at the nearest appropriate airport a nd take them into custody. After that, since they have the evidence before them, prosecute them and geve them a 30 year prison sentence in theworst (??) jail available. That way they get the drugs AND the aircraft, both of which will find their way onto the market,, if past events speak thetruth.
For further enlightenment andeducation, do a search on "No Fly Zone" in the block at the top of the page. The system described is a much better solution than the possibility of murdering innocent travelers.
I frankly don't trust the Dominican Military to get their identification right. They'rea so inept at everything else.
esides, the "Machismo" attitude of Sr. Taveras has no place in the military arena.
Most of these aircraft arrive at noght and the aircraft to be used have NO NIGHT FIGHTING capability.

There is a simple answer for:
In all their bright stupidness the goverment bought , super overprized, planes who (if they ever fly) are to fast to force a small dope-filled plane to land.
So shooting (if the guns works and if the smugglers are not "friendlies") is the only option left

joop2;
Get real, old son. Those planes can slow down to a crawl. Actually they are ideal for the purpose of intercepting civilian aircraft.
You obviously aren't a pilot so don't put egg on your face by such remarks as that one you made.
In other words, get your facts in hand before opening your mouth.

Every other formula to control drug trafficking has failed.
I assure you shutting down unidentified planes will make a difference.
any other solution will fail for one simple reason CORRUPTION.
You capture a drug dealer in the DR or any other country they will buy their way out, bribe local authorities and things will get just worst.
This is not TV I'm a native Dominican and I know how the system works, not because I read in the news or someone told me, but because I've experience it.
bottom line money talks and drug trafficking is a money making machine, there's no way to win going soft.

the us embassy objects to the downing of planes for obvious reasons, and threatens to suspend aid if the dr follows through with its intent to do so. the politicians, in a show of faux nationalism, declare that the dr government cannot be ¨handcuffed¨by the usa. i dont see the problem. i say to the dr, go right ahead, shoot them down. we just don´t want to hear any crying when the usa retaliates by cutting off aid, reducing the visa quotas, etc. some of these morons do not understand the real world. as objectionable as people might find it, the usa is not to be trifled with. trying to poke them in the eye, acting like some tough hollywood movie type, is not good sense. as Texas Bill has explained, there are ways to force planes down, other than blasting them out of the sky. if the dr pilots don´t know how, they should address their inquiries for help to TB, a proven quantity in these matters.

Thanks for the support, dreadlocks.
We don't always see eye to eye ,but there are many more waysto "skin a cat" than starting at the tail.
A logic approach is always better than creating the "Mexican Standoff" of who has the"fastest draw".
It is the type of thinking that the Delegate voiced that created the downing of that Korean Passenger plane over the waters back when. Such a murderous incident SHOULD NOT ever again occur, yet that same scenario is being set up by this Delegate's proposal.
What he suggests and supports is plain and simple "Machismastic" response to a simple problem. it is just not to be tolerated in a CIVILIZED SOCIETY.
If this "plan" iscarried to fruition, I really think the DR will suffer greatly in the International arena.
I even see a marked reduction in tourism as a result.
After all, if the DR has such a position without the means to properly identify an incoming threat, what is to prevent an Airliner from being the victim of overzealousness?

The real answer lies in increasing budgetary allowances for better RADAR coverage of the approaches to Hispaniola, an effective Air Defense Identification Zone and assurances of intercept and interdiction of incoming threats to be directed to landing fields appropriate to the aircraft in question.
Phased array radars andthe approptiate training in their opetation and maintenance is readily available as is financing. Such radar would offer complete coverage of the entire island and would facillitate sufficient warning of unwanted incursions into the DR soverign airspace, further facillitating appropriate responses by the Military authorities. In addition, radar packages could be installed on existing aircraft (Tucanos) giving them an all-weather capability. You don't need Jets to properly defend an airspace against unarmed opponents flying at subsonic speeds. If you don't have an military background, you should just listen.
