SANTO DOMINGO.- Almost half of the maternal deaths stem from infections obtained in clinics and hospitals, where women had gone to give birth, said the Public Health Ministry’s Collective Health undersecretary Nelson Rodriguez yesterday.
The official, quoted by the newspaper Listin Diario, said a Public Health survey found that 100 mothers passed away for each 100,000 registered births in the country last year, and of those deaths almost 45 percent are linked to infections obtained within those centers, public as well as private.
He noted that previously the leading cause of maternal death was post childbirth bleeding, but has fallen considerably as the emergency attention strategy was adopted during childbirth, though still remain very high from infections.
Rodriguez said they work on the corrections needed to reduce mortality from that cause in clinics and hospitals, since the country is committed to reduce by 2015, the maternal mortality rate to 44.5 for each 100,000 live births.

The deaths of infants and their mothers can't distract us from this great project, surely destined to be one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Yes, future generations will wonder how Lió-nel Fernandez and the PLD "Partido de La Liquidación Dominicana" could have been so inhuman to a country with so many PRIORITIES of human need. Nothing or no one matters more than his legacy, The METRO!
Maybe all issues in the country eventually get around to being political, but for a first comment on a health issue....leave the Metro out of it !!!!
Or should have I said: The METRO isn’t everything; it’s the only thing!
The quote is most widely attributed to American football coach Vince Lombardi; however, he did not coin the phrase. Lombardi is on record using the quote as early as 1959 in his opening talk on the first day of the Packers’ training camp. The quote captured the American public's attention during Lombardi's highly successful reign as coach of the Packers in the 1960s. Over time, the quote took on a life of its own.
In response to growing criticism surrounding the credo, Lombardi eventually came to regret the "winning is the only thing" statement and offered a repudiation, implying that what he meant to say was, “Winning is not everything - but making the effort to win is."
