SANTO DOMINGO.- President Leonel Fernandez’s job approval rating is at 46 percent, the third and last block of popularity among twenty chief executives of the hemisphere, according to the surveyor, Consulta Mitofsky, quoted by the newspaper Diario Libre.
It says the first block includes those whose popularity is more than 60 percent: Alvaro Uribe, of Colombia; Hugo Chávez, of Venezuela; Felipe Calderón, of Mexico, and Oscar Arias, of Costa Rica.
Between 50 and 60 percent are the recently-arrived Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, of Argentina, Ecuadorian Rafael Correa, the Panamanian Martín Torrijos, Bolivia’s Evo Morales, the Uruguayan Tabaré Vásquez, the Salvadoran Antonio Saca and the Brazilian Luis Inácio Lula Da Silva.
Fernandez heads the last third, those below 50 percent, with the Chilean Michelle Bachelet, with 39 percent; the American George Bush, with 34 percent; the Honduran Manuel Zelaya, and the Peruvian Alan Garcia both with 33 percent; the Guatemalan Oscar Berger, with 27 percent, the Nicaraguan Daniel Ortega, 21 percent, and the Paraguayan Nicanor Duarte, with 17 percent.
Canada’s prime minister, Stephen Harper, has 30 percent.

This is ridiculous!!!. You mean to tell me that Bush has a 34 and Fernandez 46. That's insane!! I can NEVER be THATCLOSE. Fernandez, with all his faults has attempted to clean the mess that Hipolito left behind, (the Bank collapse, high inflation etc.)
The amount of foreign investment has continued to grow and he has become less dependent on the American economy.
The Dominican Republi is as popular as ever, if not more so. What you have o hope for from a government is that if maintains economic growth, not miracles. There are more jobs (Zona Franca, call centers, technology insourcing of jobs) than with the previous government.
Running a government is a balancing act. Look at the US right now and tell me who did better: Bush or Fernandez.

To Richardalberto: agree with you 1000% buddy and very good comment, what happens is that sometimes some people want to live base on dreams and unrealistic goals.
If Leonel Fernandez wouldn't be our president Dominican Republic would be a jungle without law and order.
PLD has lots of negative actions and ministers but you know something if We compare PLD to PRD there is a 360 degrees difference in different matters.

No if you compare the PRD to the PLD you are confused. It all started with Lio-onell and his very most/best/ lies and more lies and corruption! And people get what they deserve; so vote PLD dummys!
From: United States
My comments on not based on party politics. Just that the RD has seen good growth and that there will be social problems the biggest I see is drugs and it's seed, proverty.
However, check the new jobs statistic for 2005-2008 and you'll see employment growth. The government just added more police and that also should help in the long run. Police checks at night. If you are driving a un-registered vehicle or are un-licensed your vehicle should be taken away. This way if you're a criminal you have to limit your criminal activities and excursions to your own neighborhood.

BASTA, you should run for president. What would you do different? Leonel is the best candidate but DR politicans have a longggggg way to go. He's good but he can be greater with more political will to combat corruption. Corruption is the root of alll evil
From: Dominican Republic
"PLD has lots of negative actions and ministers but you know something if We compare PLD to PRD there is a 360 degrees difference in different matters." 360 degrees is a circle. What you want to say is 180 degrees which means opposite. Something that contributes to the current crime wave that isn't talked about much is the deportees from their crime schools in the US streets and prison system and Fernandez's agreement in his first term to take them back. Balaguer seemed to have kept the US at bay on that but Leonel gave them the green light to send them back. When we look at our politics, one man cannot change the deep rooted culture of corruption. The best we could hope for is that the population at large will eventually tolerate much less corruption and demand real punishment of the corrupt. Our choice is between tweedle dum and tweedle dee. The choice is between the devil(s) we know and the other devil(s) we know.

I don't get it. I hated Hippo but Leonel is NO BETTER.
Remember when the peso was 54 to 1? Then you could buy a 6 of presidente for 156 PESOS. Today the peso is at 33 and change to one. BIG DIFFERENCE, right? Same store the 6 of Presidente is 270 Pesos.
So what is the difference? Peso is stronger and the cost is double. How does that work you ask? It is called VooDoo Economics provided by Your Man Leonel. He cooks the books on every statistic and everything cost more than when Hippo was in office which I can't figure since you guys say he fixed the country. So how did he fix the country?
Dominicans don't have US dollars they have PESOS. EVERYTHING is way more expensive than when Hippo was in office and if you changed dollars to purchase 1/3 of the cost as today.
I personally think Leonel is doing a terrible job. Hell I paid 20 pesos for 1 Plantano a few weeks ago. I paid as little as 1 peso when Hippo was in office. Mi dos pesos.
From: United States
That's very true indeed as I have found that $1US will buy two platanos, which is crazy. Imagine a family of 4 how they have to struggle. We're not talking about a family of 7, we speaking of just two parents and two children.
The problem arises on the global scale. Explain to me how a country that produces platanos sells them so expensively in their own country? The same with avocados, etc. Are the producers forced to scale back production, I must be ignorant.

I think everyone knows that Hipolito was what he was, and for those that idealize Leonel, yes he has done a lot of things better than Hippo, but the corruption is still on and the poor keep getting poorer, starving more and more every day, good things have come only for his people if you know what I mean. . . the good president in the DR would the one would make a positive change and set as a priority the Education, and Health on the poor.

Once you have a head cook and you have others who want to add there name to the dish, you will find that everyone wants credit if the dish taste good but noone can say that their two spices to the dish made the dish worse.
Its amazing, you can look at ANY country in the word that is POOR (ie: lack of running water, no electric, no adequate medical care) THERE IS ALWAYS.... ALWAYS CORRUPTION AT THE TOP !!! TFISKE, what the heck is your point when you say that a cup of coffee is 3 dollars in canada? are you trying to establish any kind of parallel between the platano and a cup of coffee? the platano is the national staple of the dominican republic, the foodstuff which sustains the lowliest of people. you dont have to drink a 3 dollar cup of coffee. you can buy a bottle or bag in the supermarket and brew your own for a few cents per cup.it is only the self absorbed idiots of the world who go out buying expensive designer coffees. on the other hand, when the platano costs 15 peso each, that represents a crisis to the poor, since not everyone can grow his own tree. so to all those in canada bleating about 3 dollar coffee i say this: let them drink tea!!!
