SANTO DOMINGO. – Dajabón’s (northwest) border market merchants are determined to impose a blockade to the flow of foodstuffs towards Haiti if Port-au-Prince persists in continuing the ban on chickens and eggs.

The market’s Chickens and Eggs Vendors Association president Freddy Morillo said they communicated their decision to Agriculture minister Salvador Jiménez, who asked them to give him until Wednesday to try to solve the problem via the diplomatic routes.

Morillo said if the measure isn’t lifted by Friday, they would shut down the market to the other food products.

Jimenez promised he would speak with president Leonel Fernandez so that he receives a National Chicken Producers Association commission on Wednesday, and expects a missive to Haiti president René Preval asking him to lift the ban, in effect since December.

"The spirit of the merchants who labor in the commerce in the Dajabón zone is to close the overall border," Morillo said, though stressed they’ll wait until Friday.

Lió-nel Fernandez spent a lot of money to get the DR a seat at the United Nations Security Council, however he can not even negotiate the lifting of egg and chicken ban from Haiti. What an international statesman, no wonder he was rejected at the UN.

The "Avian Flu Virus" was found in the poultry of the Dominican Republic and now special interest Dominican groups have the nerve to spew threats at the Haitian government to drop the ban. What type of behavior is this? The Haitian gov't should keep the ban on till they are sure that measures taken by D.R. are good enough for them.

I dont understand the rationale of the DR gov't. The virus has been detected and numerous countries have banned the importation of chicken & eggs from the DR yet Dominican interest groups are angry because Haiti has done what any sensible administration would have done. You tell me if that makes any sort of sense whatsoever.

To jemmesouviens and the next one: you are 100% right on Your comments and 100% right on your opinions (I AGREE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY BUDDY) what I never get from you and your haitians fellow contrymen is why most of the times You guys like to spew your venom against us.

That kind of animosity will heat up while haitians always want to have negative and bad feelings towards Dominican Republic.

If you want to change Your country You have to start in (Haiti) not in DR, wish you and your country good luck but as long as I see negavtive comments about my homeland then We will have an ugly issue to discuss.

Once again Haitians are right 100% in this issue but let's learn to separate matters and also stop insulting DR and Juan Pablo Duarte. "Love and Peace"

"Good enough for them" jemesouviens1804??? Are you kidding me? Haiti has no controls in place at all. We don't just don't have the means to detect, let alone try to control the Avian Flu virus. Dr does, good for them, and they are doing something about it, again, good for them. All of this talk about trade bans and political pressure and the whatnot is so unfortunate. I have no idea whether the virus is already here. I suspect it probably is. I also have no idea whether the virus first got to Haiti, and then jumped to DR, or vice versa. I would love to see my government to swallow their pride and say to the DR: "Hey, we need your help. Will you help us detect this virus? Can you teach us how to do it? Can you lend us some of your resources?" Instead, it seems as though we just can't resist an opportunity to kick sand in DR's eyes... How sad.
