President Fernandez hands out toys to mark the Epiphany.

SANTO DOMINGO. - The opposition PRD party’s presidential candidate party challenged president Leonel Fernandez to debate the Marbella scandal and the origin of both their fortunes.

Miguel Vargas Maldonado said he’s unaware of any productive activity by Fernandez to justify his alleged wealth. "Since here it’s been spoken of funds, wealth, we are ready to show the country where our funds and assets have come from."

He said his assets are the result of more than 30 years of work as an engineering professional and private real estate industrialist, a time in which he said he developed multiple, national and international projects worth millions.

He said in a debate with Fernandez he would show that in the last 10 years he’s paid more than RD$300 million in taxes. "I will show that in personal terms we have paid more taxes than Fernandez’s entire cabinet and the political committee of the PLD (ruling party)."

Vargas Maldonado spoke during a breakfast hosted by the director of the newspaper Listin Diario, Miguel Franjul.

"What we can’t explain is how people who’ve never practiced any type of productive activity can exhibit the conditions they exhibit in economic terms," he said, adding that he’s willing to talk about the Marbella scandal, one of Spain’s most astounding cases of government corruption.

"The case of Spain is interesting, because there we must determine who’s linked to the Marbella case, if it’s the present candidate to the reelection or I,” he said, in clear reference to Fernandez.

He said the Dominican State has all the facilities to contact Spain’s judicial authorities to determine if he’s involved in the case. "As for me, I could establish any involvement which they can have with the issue.”

Listen Carefully MVM.. As we say were am from "Don't play yourself" your full of lies.. .

I personally know people from the Dominican south who have been doing crooked schemes with you for the past 30 some odd years who are also wealthy SOB’s... Give us a break; it’s no secret in DR that you’re no saint....

LF, besides what he has $tolen .. (Which could not conceivably add up to what you and your coon’s stole during the last PRD administration from public works funding) was getting paid to perform speeches in public and private Universities throughout the US and Europe... for which am sure he profited handsomely...

The only people who would hire you to speak are probably the bosses of the organized crime families of New York.. .

DrCiSkoFC- Your posting expresses in clear terms, the reasons why corruption will continue to be a way of life in this country. The tolerance for corruption that you have expressed with respect to this issue and LF only re-enforces the old dictum that power corrupts and abosolute power corrupts absolutely. Our presidents are given absolute power by followers such as you who are prepared to follow blindly and not hold them accountable and are willing to make excuses for them. Look at your third paragragh: "LF, besides what he has $tolen .. ". Pathetic

Please Juan, by all means do not confuse my interpretation.. I do not condone such behavior from anyone who holds public office. which is why I do not follow any political party.. It’s just a fact not only in Dominican society, but happens in all nations throughout the world... Politicians give a little and take a little. It just so happens that some give more than they take ..

"Politicians give a little and take a little" may be true, but our message should always be one of zero tolerance. I for one would like to have LF explain the source of his new found wealth and if he can't explain it, then he should pay the price because he represents us and works for us and must not disrespect us or steal from us use us in the capacity of our president to acheive personal ill begotten gains. How does he go from rags to riches on a president's salary even if you get paid for making speaches? Please Explain It To Us All Mr. President.

Both aspirants will probably agree to such a debate. They both will use this platform to denegrate the other party with a huge number of accusations derrogatory to that persons character and honor. while simultanously hypine their own supposed "unblemished" character and service to the masses.
It's all a political stunt, so get it through all your heads that NOTHING will be revealed that will belittle the individuals nor their reputations(?) for being the one to be elected Preasidente.
It's all a sham of the first water and is both politically and emotionally motivated to focus public attention on something else than the everyday problems of no electricity, public scandals, purchase of the outdated and antiquated Refinery purchase, etc., etc.

We should not lower our requirements just because "this is how things have been and are". If we do not pressure our leaders for change, then then this is how things "will continue to be". But oh the possibility for change! The people who benefit from the status quo are the last who will push for change. WE THE PEOPLE need to push for change. We need to demand to be included in the decision making process so that another "Metro" or "Harley" or "Plan Renove" fiasco do not occur. But our political institutions are structured to keep us (the people) out of politics. since I'm just rehashing things I've said in the past, I'll conclude by saying that we need to make demands of our leaders to be clearer with their political platforms - what do you stand for? - these empty slogans of "progress" and "jobs" say nothing!

If the PRD, PLD, or PRSC are unwilling to change, then we need to look for new pol movements that put people, not personal interest first. Show me a politician that wants to invest in the public sphere, protect the environment, , uphold human rights for ALL, and is willing to work to reconstruct our political infrastructure to include WE THE PEOPLE, instead of pushing us away.

The exclusion of the people is what allows for corruption to continue. We cannot rest or become overwhelm in our struggle to create a better society. We need to learn from oppressed people from around the world who became too frustrated with the status quo and CHANGED their society through protest, by supporting new political movements, by saying "ENOUGH!!!"

I say ENOUGH with corruption, hatred, divisiveness, elitism, exclusion, hunger, poverty, inequality, devastation of the environment, violation of human rights, lack of public services, illiteracy.

I say enough with politics as usual!
