SANTO DOMINGO.- The Justice Ministry yesterday desisted from the prosecution against those convicted of fraud, arguing that the depositors didn’t file any criminal charges against the accused nor showed any interest on the matter.
In a signed affidavit, Justice minister Radhamés Jiménez said he doesn’t object that the Supreme Court revoke the 8-year prison sentence against Arturo Pellerano Peña and Felipe Mendoza, Bancredito’s president and executive vice president, on charges of defrauding that bank’s depositors.

Truth and justice in Lie-onel's METROLANDIA!
From: United States
or........"SCAMALANDIA"..........crime dose pay very well in DR.
From: Dominican Republic
"SCANDALANDIA" is more like it!! I think the nowhere to be found Radhames Jiminez with the illedgible signature should take their place in prison..........this stinks!! Have the thousands of people they robbed really dropped the charges, those that lost their life savings or business. Is it not the Justice Ministry prosecutors job to seek justice on the peoples behalf? If so then he must be the one dropping the charges, if not the justice ministry should be disbanded for failure to function and provide justice to the people. the government here funtions like the old Keystone Cops, whatta place!!! Well if they are released you can bet they will find jobs in the government quickly. They can help do the same thing to the Central bank and Banreservas at the end of this electoral term in the name of just-us!!.
From: United States
yes, it is like dropping murder charges against a killer, because the victim did not file charges. it is actions like this which cause the Dominican Republic to be a laughing stock in the international community. how can you expect to be viewed as a serious country when you have a judiciary that makes such decisions? is this the same set of jurists who issued a search warrant in a civil matter? Lord, help us.

dreads,,,,everyone in this case paid off (money, realestate, iou's)....case closed.

Dominicans are a pathetic group of people. Shameless.
From: Dominican Republic
DR1 states the the RD2.5 million peso fine does not have to be paid either..........sooo they get to keep every peso of the billions they stole!! Honest kids her used to dream of becoming major league baseball players to get rich, now they want to become politicians and bankers.....high pay and you get to keep everything you steal!! What a message to send the youth!
From: United States
you know what is really sad, gmiller? they either see nothing wrong with this kind of behavior, or they do not care what others think. either way, it reflects a complete lack of morality. when i use the word "they", i am referring to the politicians, thieves, and politicos, not the long-suffering everyday soul.
From: Dominican Republic
Dread, I believe in this case "politicians, thieves and politicos" are synonymous!!
From: United States
domericano, i thought the same thing myself, after writing the line, i thought it was redundant to say politicians and thieves in the same sentence.

Dread, Sad but true.
From: Dominican Republic
Josean, I think the thieves are insuling us with the right out in the open ,blatant, rampant corruption that takes place here not only on a daily basis but hourly I think! Where are the superheroes of yesteryear that stood up for peoples rights, the statues of these men with their swords raised high are in the parks and rotundas everywhere in the country. Your Dominican ancestors, is there no one cut from this cloth anymore?

They are out there and it is only a matter of time before the public gets fed up. Trujillo met his end and these criminals will get theirs.
I hope Guillermo Moreno will do a long term grassroots effort so we can have a serious option in the next election.
I think the people will be ready next time for some real change as they have come to realize that Lie-onel The Messiah is really the 666 beast!
From: Dominican Republic
josean, I think the part of the public that is privy to the semblance of the education offered here and has some exposure to the news media that takes the time to read/watch the current events must be fed up. There is a thin line between fed up and fired up. I think most people are so preoccupied with getting a meal on the table or keeping their lights turned on that they don't have the time to be proactive against corrupt politics here and that's why those in power get away with it. There are good men here, the Moreno's, Cocco"s and Guerrero"s are surely fighting an uphill battle as are some of the news reporters. The problem is some tradgedy always seems to befall them before they are in a position of great power.

"Revolucion, revolucion, revolucion!
They chanted before the shots ran out and they were silenced forever"
Diary of a revolutionary during the 1965 Dominican civil war.
The purest movement to set things right in DR history, April 24, 1965.
The uprising as you know was put down and the principals persecuted and slowly exterminated,
resulting in Balaguer staying in power by voter scam for 12 terrible years.
But in the other hand if they had succeeded with all the leftist influence in the movement we would have been like Fidel's Cuba. Lot's of literacy, public health but little freedom of expression and economic opportunities. Give me freedom or give me death.
From: United States
generoso, why does it have to be one extreme or the other? there are places in the middle, which work. scandinavia and western europe have public health, lots of literacy, and plenty of freedom of expression. and the material benefits are pretty good, too. its all about nuance. not everything is black or white.

Well I agree, let's find nuance and the middle way because the way things are now, it's not working.
The color gray to me (the mix between black and white) is depressing and dull.
I always thought that we could take the best things in social democracy and the best things in capitalism and merge them along with a true an independent justice and accountability supervision.
Also the right to impeach and end terms of corrupt public servants.
Did you know that the Dominican constitution gives dictatorial rights to the president to spend as he pleases a large amount of public revenue regardless of the budget limitations?
This only exists in DR and it was designed by the likes of Trujillo and Balaguer and NO president has wanted to change this once they are in office because it will limit their discretionary spending powers.
The present constitution reforms are been evaluated by a commission that will probably give the right of reelection to Leonel forever and ever.

Wow, reading you guys comments makes me think there is the makings of an honest government right here amongst you posters..a little from the left, a little from the right and alot from right down the middle. The middle road is often the least traveled but sometimes is the most direct route to where you want to go/be. I have always had an extremist and excessive personality...............i find something I like, gimme lots of it!! Things were always hot or cold, black or white, love or hate, sweet or sour for me and it always led to problems for me. It is only now after many years that I can see the grey, feel the warmth, learn to be happy with something you like and taste the savory side of life. Extremism is for the young and passionate and stout of heart but often a key ingredient to bring about the changes needed in a suppressed society, but not necessarily whats needed to sustain it. 'nuff said!!
From: United States
domericano, you and generoso have said some pretty sage things. extremists cannot possibly be happy people, and happiness is the most important thing in life, as long as we do not seek it at other people's expense. but would you like to live your life being Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity, forever angry, supporting extreme positions, and confronting "the others"?

Thanks Josean I will keep it in mind. It will be wonderful if I could borrow it from a local library in SD.

josean, i see you have an interest in one of my inspirations, old Texan Jim Hightower. his blog is inspirational. my respect for you increases by the minute.
From: Dominican Republic
josean, I can tell I would like the book just by the title !! It gave me a good chuckle. Anybody know of A good bookstore in Santo domingo (english)? I am an avid and fast reader and have depleted my library here until I get another fix from a visiting relative, but I'll put Hightower on the must have list. dread, I spent alot of my life being pissed about 4 years of my life in the 60's but finally let it go to pursue the best rums and prostitutes the planet had to offer. I am normally a bit of an introvert until you add some rum to the mix and then I get a little rowdy. I have sat back and read DT since it's inception and feel I know some of you guys somewhat. It was the day after day negative articles and injustices that finally got me pissed and out of the closet. I am a giver not a taker, enjoy helping others and

besides, domericano, any guy who can articulate himself as intelligently as you, yet loves his booze and poon tang, is a guy i would love to share a few beers with. i just have no patience for fools, and offer no apology. have an extra beer for me tonight!

If you guys have never seen "Zeitgeist" go out and rent it our buy it and get back to me you opinions. when you guys come into town let me know and we will share a few beers and although I have shared women in the past in crazier times you guys will have to get your own as the one I have now is a keeper and not to be shared.

This is an outrage totally defying any judicial system...These judges need to be removed!!!
From: Dominican Republic
Hey, back on track for a minute. DR1 stated that Radhames Jimenez was not able to be reached for comment as he was out of the country. They also said that his signature on the release document was illedgible!! How about this scenario: He returns next week and finds out these crooks/creeps have been released and is outraged and demands to know who authorized their release. The document with the "signature" is shown to him and he adamantly denies it's his signature and calls for a complete investigation and the whereabouts of the two escaped (very wealthy) convicts. Of course the convicts are out of the country adding the personal touch to the transfer of funds from their accout into Mr. Jimenez's...............Does that sound plausible?

Hey, I've been reading on Hightower's website..............GREAT!!! I have added him to my favorites. I recall seeing him on the Glenn Beck show once and I liked him then. Every state should have one guy like him. His witticisms are hillarious and his insights are right on and he goes to the trouble of backing them up. Thanks again for the turn on!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW no surprise! That the ruling was passed down anyone with $$ can get away with anything in D.R. This behavior will continue for hundreds of years until some of these criminals are put in jail for there actions. So the workers can steal people's life savings and because those people did not file charges; those individuals who commit fraud just get away with it.
What a joke the D.R. justice system!
