SANTO DOMINGO.- From now on if you litter, drive too slow or sell on the public thoroughfare you’ll be fined RD$1,000, states the Justice Ministry's table of new fine amounts to be applied on 43 violations of Traffic Law 241.

The fines were increased from RD$530 to RD$1,000, or one fifth the public sector minimum wage, recently set at RD$5,000, whereas a court will establish the amount for more serious cases in different ways. The minimum fine will now  be RD$1,000 and the maximum jumps from RD$884 to RD$1,667, or a third of the public sector minimum wage. The lack of insurance, registration, license plate and sticker, and helmets for bikers, are also subjec to fines.

Public transport drivers caught without markers (pirates), will also get the same fine, whereas the obstruction to transit, prohibited parking, violation of transit signals, driving the wrong way, running a stop sign and unlawful U-turns will aslo get the stiffer penalties.

Everyone one knows that the police enforce it for 3 weeks then realize that the ones that are getting tickets are connected and nothing happens to them. And the police that gave them the tickets are chastised, if not fired.

Corruption, corruption, corruption.

Almost all infractions are non-moving violations. Maybe the country could invest in some patrol cars to enforce some of the laws on public highways instead of flag down people at intersections and hope they stop! Oh, wait, that would require training as well. HHmmmm.

Do you guys think that since new and used car sales have tanked, this might be a reason to start "cracking down" on the removal of "unsafe cars"?
