SANTIAGO. - The strike staged by the Alternative Social Forum in Duarte and Hermanas Mirabal (north) provinces to demand the construction and completion of public works extended to other communities in the region, fueled by the death  of two youngsters in San Francisco de Macorís.

In Duarte province Israel Polanco and Juan Luis Gomez were killed when they played basketball in the street.

Among the communities in that province that joined the protest are Canca la Reina, El Peru, El Billar La Dura, Monte de la Jagua, where schools, businesses and transport were affected.

The mobilizations also took place in some parts of Espaillat and Santiago, in the municipalities Licey and Navarrete, and in the municipalities Luperón, Guananico, Castillo and Pimentel, where more than 25 people have been detained in the last few hours.

I find it hard to believe that even the DR police would deliberately gun down a couple of kids playing basketball in the vicinity of the demonstration. There is more to this story than is being told. I hope the truth comes out and offers some solace for the families of these boys.

This government wasted US$ 700,000,000 million plus, on a METRO to nowhere as a campaign reelection gimmick while the educational system is in the toilet, and you find it hard to believe they have no compassion for poor kids!

How naive can one be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tragedy is that most Dominicans when they gain some wealth have little compassion for their fellow dominicans and so the rule of life of looking after people less fortunate than oneself is seldom followed and education and health and general care for the poor is disregarded.

Well said, Josean!

In 2004, police came to my barrio Ensanche Caonabo - Santiago to bring "street justice" to a man named TORO, a Tigre (criminal) who would NOT pay & play by their rules. Over 2 dozen policeman track him down, held him at gun point & then formed firing squad. It's a gross understatement 2 say they shot him. More correctly, TORO was "riddled" with bullets so much so that they broke his skull open & part of his brain enlarged & bulged out!

This wasn't because Toro was a criminal BUT because he would NOT share $$ with Police & DNCD! Because many Tigres still deal drugs today.

Domericano, during this process a beautiful Dominican girl 4 yo was struck by police stray bullet. The father pleaded with Santiago police to take her to the hospital due to their mishap. The police responded "it is not our problemo its yours"!

Now, if you know anyone from my barrio then confirm the story.

So now, please tell me what the heck Domericano is talking about?

josean, first of all let me congratulate you for your persistance and accomplishing the insertion of "METRO" into yet another post which has nothing to do with it. I realize it's your pet peeve and rightly so............it was/is a huge ripoff. As to my being naive.................my mind is open to all the possibilities that led to these kids deaths whereas you take exception to the suggestion of a possibility not only viable but highly plausible. That' naive! The Alternative (to what) Social (socialist?) Forum has alot to gain by throwing fuel on the fire.........national attention to their cause while justified is no reason to be involved in violent demonstrations that lead to the death of innocents. Were they involved.........I don't know!! Were the boys innocents............I don't know!! Did the police kill these kids who were/were not armed..............I don't know!! Are the police capable of extreme prejudice......yes they are. What I do know is that WE don'y know all facts.

JD, Please allow me to explain myself "what the heck I am talking about" and congratulate you as well for working your main concern into this article. I have followed your posts for a couple of years about your Santiago barrio, the criminal brothers who rule it and the DNCD/police they payoff daily to look the other way. Your cause is just and needs to be told again and again!! What I fail to understand is why the police with all the scrutiny and spotlights they are under nationwide would shoot these unarmed? boys knowing it would infuriate an already incendiary situation!! What's to be gained? Surely there will be an investigation. I know in the past they have used extreme prejudice without cause and after a short span of time all is forgotten. In my minds eye when I play this out I just don't see it...........accident,yes..............used to further some agenda, maybe. As I stated, I just don't think we have all the facts and there is more to this story than we have been told.

domericano.

Why should I deny Lie-onel the right to highlight the METRO, since this is the “CROWNING ACHEIVEMENT” of his administration!

He put all his eggs in the METRO basket now he must live with it!

However, the METRO is but a symptom of a much more serious decease, which is institutional corruption and Lie-onel and the PLD are just the current carriers of this malady.

It appears that your pet peeve is innuendo, for example : "The Alternative (to what) Social (socialist?)"

Josean, if the metro is Lionels crowning achievement let it be a crown of thorns and cause him the pain that the cost of it has caused the people. I wonder would the people be better off if he had built a couple power plants and upgraded electrical distrubution.Just a thought! My pet peeve is pet peeves............we ALL have them and to one extent or another most are probably justified. I think the cause we should take up is what Lionel is trying to do with the constitution!! If you don't like him now how are you going to feel about him in 10 or 20 more years.......stll the president and still dodging the Sunland issue.....................where is his financial statement? is he above the laws of the constitution? I think these questions need answers and monitoring. Metro was just a warm up, a precursor to what's coming to a theater near you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
