SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Presidency’s Chief of Staff on Thursday told the legislators not to let themselves be intimidated by Washington’s communication questioning the bill to allow the shooting down of unidentified airplanes when its confirmed they carry drugs.
Cesar Pina Toribio responded to a document warning Santo Domingo that if it passes a law to down airplanes, the United States government would be forced to consider discontinuing certain assistance it gives to the country, “this would entail at least to end the assistance of aerial tracking in real time,” cautions the U.S. document.
Yesterday the Chamber of Deputies failed for the second time to debate the pending legislation, a delay the pro-government deputy Pelegrin Castillo sees as bowing to pressure from the U.S.

Will these airplanes have signs on the sides that say, "Drugs on Board'? How can the air force pilots be sure otherwised? Why not teach our pilots how to force the other plane to land?

How did this get to Pending Legislation? At least the Deputies did one thing right., they didn't waste their time debating it.
From: Dominican Republic, San Carlos, barrio de matatanes, aqui no invente
F.Y.I: One way to find out if an aircraft is illegally entering Dominican air space is to radio in the identified aircraft (all aircraft are required to have a serial # in the tail that reference the owner, type of a/c and manufacturer.). Also 99.9 % this drug plane fly at a low altitude to avoid radar detection, if you are an air force pilot and you come across a small plane hugging the sea, you know that guy is loaded. There are tactics and maneuvers to force a landing or make the illegal a/c turn back, then you could fire warning shots to intimidated anyone trying to make a drop off.
If none of the above fails, burn baby burn!
Look I know this is a controversial issue but let me tell you something
We have a lot qualified pilots for this kind of job.
Besides is all about communication all legal a/c have a piece of equipment call a transponder, this technology allows a pilot to remain in contact with air ctrl at all times
Drug planes don’t have this equipment.

It's a stupid law and I hope they don't pass it. Shooting down planes just because they have drugs on board?! That's just wrong. Just follow them until they eventually commit suicide by running out of fuel in the ocean somwhere!

I thought about this long and hard after my original post on the first article.
I have to agree that the DR shouldn't let the US influence them, as long as they fully understand the repercussions. .
The idea of them possibly shooting down suspect aircraft should be a deterrent for the smugglers to find a different route.
Or will the smugglers shoot back , with RPG's unlikely but this is big money.
Does anyone think the DR wants to send the message to tourists " Come to the Beautiful Dominican Repubic" but make sure to pack your bullet proof vest and be careful for airplanes parts falling from the sky.. Enjoy !!!

In case none of you have given thought to the following, maybe you should.
The US provides certain radar coverage of the approaches to the DR. By doing so, they would then be a party to the "shooting down" of unidentified aricraft, or sinking of vessels, approaching the DR coastling should that occur. Therefore, how would the US explain such an occurance to the World Community, should the subject aircraft/vessel prove to be completely innocent?
NOW, DO YOU UNDERSTAND???
If not, I can DRAW YOU A PICTURE!
There is NO INTIMIDATION INTENDED on the part of the US, so shut up with your misplaced indignity over the matter.

(21) Senator Kerry had criticized the DoD's decision to end cooperation with Colombia and Peru, saying that it "cut off at the knees a program that was working." 140 CONG. So much concentrations on such a small group which are the drug traffickers. The concerned is not drug but rather the un-tax money that it generates. Most important that issue blinds people to more important issues that must be addressed. For D.R. they just want to present themselves as fighter against drugs so that the U.S. can hand them -- MONEY -- like a dog, " here, such a good boy ", " now go and get them ". The D.R. is not demonstrating that its free from U.S. might by saying whaterver cause the U.S. don't care just as long as D.R. keeps its present formed of system of governing. As a matter of fact stating not to let washington intimadate them is good wording as far as the U.S. is concerned cause it helps masked the U.S. influences over D.R. In reality they are not standing up on their two feet to determined their owned destiny but instead are bowing to have the U.S. make D.R. desteny.
