SANTO DOMINGO. – As the front end loaders other equipment used to extract sand and gravel are pulled out of the riverbanks, the people who live off those materials have now resorted to shoveling and filling the trucks by hand, to continue earning their income, and new foes for the country’s rivers.
Despite the Environment Ministry’s ban aimed at preventing the depredation of the rivers, the shovelers –called the ant men- believe the new practice doesn’t cause any damage.
Environment’s ban doesn’t sit well not only for those who’ve made fast money through that practice, but also for the shovelers who get only 200 pesos for filling a truck, complaining that now they cannot take the regular sustenance to their children as they did two or three weeks ago. In each trip the truck owners make as much as RD$7,000.
“Sand extraction is now a bad word, there’s a damn thing called Environment that has put the brakes on all,” said one of the “ant men” in Haina River, who asked not to print his name.

Are you from California "dude?"
You quite tiresome with the "METRO" issue, sorry to ask you for 4th time, are you sure you not Haitian full of hate and envy??????
In case you did not know my posts are not required reading.
Much less do not feel obligated to comment with your standard pathological response of disparaging Haitian remarks!
Sorry but I truly believe that You hate Dominican Republic because you are Haitian........
All I can say is you are a sure bet!
Josean is an Haitian national that can't stand Dominican Republic going the right direction..
I am a native Californian and no matter how bad things get we still find time to enjoy life.
Just don't cut me off on the '10" or 'the 210" because I will run you down and jerk you out of your car. That's a Californian's character flaw... but other then that ,we are layed back.
Which by the way makes driving here in the DR very difficult for a 'Road Rage Warrior."
Sometimes you post some great stuff but then you screw it up with this "repetitive propaganda".
Much like the belated Belial...
After electing Ronald Regan and Arnold Schwarzenegger I would not use California as an example of a place to emulate, with regard to selecting "leaders!"
