SANTO DOMINGO.- National Drugs Control (DNCD) agents yesterday arrested in Punta Cana airport a British couple accompanied by two children, with three packages of cocaine weighing more than 4.5 kilos.

DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebrón, said the spouses, Nelly Catherine Cardigan and Daniel Marcus Patterson, were about to board Thompson Fly flight 5232  to London. The children have ages of 5 and 7.

He said the British embassy will be informed of the arrests in the next few hours and that the cocaine was in Cardigan’s luggage in four packages.

I am sure they mistakenly grabbed the cocaine when they meant to grab the baby powder, I mean everyone surely has that quantity of Cocaine just hanging out with them on vacation.

I Noticed the way people are talking about these Britons, one must be careful not to be so ignorant..... Not all Britons are this way! Our own Dominicans are horrible with drug dealing and such! Lets not lable a whole nation because of two greedy nut jobs...... And the lets not forget they contribute a lot to our turism which = Jobs for our people.

As a Travel Agent and a regular traveller to the Dom Rep (Punta Cana in particular) and also being an "Evil Brit", I have to say that your comments are disgusting, I have 2 children who travel with me to Punta Cana, Does this mean I am a drug smuggler also? How can people from such large nations where horrific deeds are done each and every day condemn a whole nation on the act of 2 extremely irresponsible people?
If anybody should be ashamed it is those who have condemned the people of my country for something that I have never heard of a british family doing before!

You have to be really naive to put cocaine in your luggage and think that you are going to get away with it just because you are white with 2 pretty little smiling white kids. It is not only latino or black people who smuggle drugs. Asians, whites, latinos, black, indians etc...are capable of criminal acts. But you have to be extremely dumb, desperate or on drugs to take the risk of going through an airport with drugs. I have heard of people being set up and did not know drugs were in their luggage. That is why you have to prepare you own luggage and double check it at the airport. Whatever the case is, it is not fair to generalized and say all brits, all Colombians, or all blacks are drug users or smugglers. Remember, foreigners bring tourism, income and create jobs in your country. Otherwise, the DR will be like Haiti with no tourists and major unemployment. Don't scare the tourists away or you may be soon get the same bad reputation as Haiti.
