SANTO DOMINGO.- The Justice Ministry’s Anti-laundering Unit received 21 offers  to rent the businesses seized from the Benítez brothers, wanted in the United States on charges of swindling US$110 million from the Social Security system.

The proposals will be processed to establish which of them qualify for the leases.

The businesses to be rented are the motel Bayamesa, on the capital’s Malecon; 32 apartments, the motels Singapore, Mi Casa, an aquatic park, two villas located in the Bavaro tourist resort, 12 luxury apartments located in the tower Malecon Center, a helicopter, as well as more than 20 boats.

The brothers Carlos, Luis and Jose Benítez are fugitives, and Jose’s son Elvis Benítez, revealed that they’re being held in Cuba in unspecified circumstances.

Why not auction them off to the highest bidder instead of having to rent them out and have another government department have to administer them, Oh wait, I forgot there are probably more political appointments to be made so I guess this is a perfect opportunity to "employ" friends of the administration.
