Santo Domingo.- Dominican traffic cops have orders to impound vehicles with the steering wheel on the right, while the dealers who import them yesterday said they’ll abide by a Dominican Customs Agency (DGA) resolution that bans them.

They said they should be allowed to sell those they have in stock and those on the way.

Alerson Garcia, manager of the dealer Mateosa, said they’re negotiating with Customs to reach an agreement to allow them to sell off those vehicles and those coming by ship from Japan.

To DGA’s decision will be enforced by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet) whose director Rafael Bencosme, instructed officers to impound them, and returned only after their owners can take trhem to shops to be modified.

Cristina Vidal, of Ramsar Motors, said they welcome the measure, and noted that while they don’t sell those types of cars, admitted they import them.

In the meantime Amet has been instructed to totally ignore overloaded vintage Toyota Corollas without floors, cracked or smashed windshields and headlights that point every direction other than where they should. Also to be ignored are motoconchos with a dangling bulb for a headlight carrying families of 4 plus the week's supply of propane, trucks with bald tires carrying 50+ workers hanging off from every angle and bent out of shape buses that seat 40...seating 80.

All in an effort to get these very dangerous late model right-hand drive cars off the road.

Truly laughable!

This effort is a waste of police resources. People should have freedoms of choice because this is no real risk or threat!

How about using these officiers to do foot patrols in at-risk barrios so that good citizens feel safer? These officiers could be a deterrent to crime in high risk barrios and even close down drug points. The RD officials are clueless and blinded by their own greed from drug profits. They are more concerned about which side the steering wheel is on....rather than drug dealers selling drugs on school routes of youth like in my Santiago barrio of Ensanche Caonabo (near the Cibao Stadium). Incredible!

Stupidity, greed and ignorance of the RD Gov are NOT attractive features!

Now, JD_Dominguez, you know there is no place for logical thinking in Lie-onel's METROLANDIA!

This is really a priority, not ! all the other islands allow right and left hand drive cars.

What they should do to raise revenue is charge for a temporary license like they do in Antigua.

20.00 from every tourist or person who rents a car without a DR license could help fill a lot of potholes.
