SANTO DOMINGO.- The investigators of the Tuesday night murder of Police major Paula Mercedes handle several hypotheses, among them a case reportedly assigned to her, whereas a senior officials sees a potential link to organized crime.
Police chief Rafael Guzmán said yesterday there are yet to be arrests in the case that has consternated the department, but affirmed that the investigation advances.
Moreover, Armed Forces chief Rafael Peña called the crime “a frank defiance” of the authorities.
Mercedes was assistant director for Internal Affairs in the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet), headed by Rafael Bencosme Candelier. She was gunned down at the door of her house by two unidentified men; one of them shot her point-blank three times.
“Much attention must be paid to that murder,” the Presidency’s Narcotics adviser Marino Vinicio Castillo warned yesterday, affirming that it has all the signs of organized crime. He noted that the attackers, who rode on a motorcycle, didn’t show an interest of robbery.
He also noted that Mercedes was Bencosme’s right hand when he was the head of the Police Criminal Investigations Division.
Castillo also didn’t discard a link with drug trafficking, especially with the murders of seven men in Baní.

"FRANK DEFIANCE" of the authorities. How about frank defiance by the authorities. she was assigned to internal affairs, investigating the "AUTHORITIES". She was most likely killed by someone in the "AUTHORITIES"
Trying to say it is related to the old narcotics is unlikely. She would not have had a direct relation which would create the animosity required to have her killed. Her death would not have curtailed a trial or a conviction.
If it is as they say not based on sentimental reasons, it was someone who had nothing to lose and was really pissed off at her specifically.
ANYWAY YOU LOOK AT IT, A TRAGIC LOSS.

The RD trend is that "Authorities" are partners with organized crime!
It does not matter how many planes you buy or high tech equipment... because the authorities are so corrupt that they can turn the other cheek or flip a switch and turn off radar so that drug planes can land. This internal affairs person was simply one who wanted to do her job, one of the few that did not want to play ball with criminals.
The US DEA, FBI have no-idea how deep corruption runs within the rank and file of the RD Gov counterparts. So, how can our US officials plan strategically with DNCD, RD military and RD Gov officials when the Dominican officials themselves are guilty and engaged in cover-ups.
Well, I am sure Fannin will plan another tea party with the Embassy staffers instead of leading like a leader to inform US authorities of what is really going on. More "do nothing" politics well thank God change is coming!

ABR23, very wise remarks. yes, internal affairs is there to investigate the police, nothing else. so, maybe some cop, or cops, had her snuffed. maybe she was getting too close to something.

cant PAY your way out of killing a POLICE OFFER in the states..... not for all the gold in the world... you kill a cop in the states and the police are looking to KILL you and maybe more... most gangsters think twice before doing some thing like this.

Danny00, that is why even the most hardened members of the Cosa Nostra in the USA would never condone the killing of a Fed by any of its members. if some wise guy killed, or attempted to kill a fed, he himself would probably be kiilled. that is because they knew that the feds would never stop with the hunt, even if they had to take down the entire organisation. and yes, international law enforcement is perfectly aware of the goings-on here. we just think that they do not.

If I can read right, she was IA at AMET.
Now what big major case could she have been working on? 200 peso bribes?
