Santo Domingo.– Four Dominicans have been charged with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly helping to organize an illegal boat trip to Puerto Rico that ended in the deaths of 29 migrants.

A judge has ordered Gregorio Maria Marizan and his brother Saulo to spend a year in prison until the trial begins.

Two other migrants who survived have been ordered to appear before a magistrate every week until a court date is set.

Gregorio Maria had said the boat's engines failed and that the captain disappeared when people started dying.

Maria and four others survived at sea by eating the flesh of fellow migrants who died. One of the five survivors later died at a hospital.

this is still an occurrence that is fairly rare ....think of the 50 years the totalitarian commies in Cuba have been forcing their citizens to this kind of fate in numbers of hundreds of thousands

I really don't get this at all.

"Gregorio Maria had said the boat's engines failed and that the captain disappeared when people started dying."

"And now, for my next act, I'll need yet ANOTHER volunteer...... anyone?....anyone? "

well, they should charge these guys with 29 counts of involuntary manslaughter, with sentences to run consecutively. that way, they will not be planning any more boat trips any time soon. then again, we do not know which politico is financing the trips, so....

i am always perplexed by the Dominican legal dynamic by which people are sent into "protective custody" for periods like six months, then tried when they get out. first of all; what if they are found innocent? who gives them their time back? i am aware that there are innocent people doing jail time, but that is usually after a trial. next, how do you marshall evidence againts them, when victims and witnesses have all this time to move on to parts unknown?
