Has President Fernandez led the PLD to the edge of the abyss?
Zoom Picture

SANTO DOMINGO.- For ruling PLD party senior leader Euclides Gutiérrez, if that organization doesn’t fulfill its commitments with the nation it should dissolve.

Just one day after another senior leader Alejandrina German complained the PLD has forgotten the lessons of the founder Juan Bosch, Gutiérrez said a minority of the party’s members are “vain, babble-mouthed and graduated in the academy of the incoherent loons.”

PLD spokesman in the Senate Luis René Canaán supported German’s criticism.

Gutiérrez yesterday said the PLD must face the challenges with honesty and bravery and meet the commitments with the nation, or dissolve.

He said if the PLD continues accepting imprudence, individualism, ignorance, lack of good sense and corruption, it will continue “dragging” itself and Leonel Fernandez’s Administration into an ambush, submerging it into “history’s garbage can.”

The member of the PLD’s Political Committee and one of its founders made the statements in his weekly column published in the yesterday’s edition of newspaper El Nacional also said some of his party companions are vain, arrogant and ignorant. “Without a doubt there are party companions who are corrupt.”

He added that those PLD members “speak of, agree with and imitate the worse of society,” doing what pleases them under an alleged presidential protection.

Strong but true criticism of a party that had shown great promise ....Lionel himself should use these times to speak against the systematic corruption of the government and the people that aspire to be part of it and perceive it as a big candy jar.....We certainly must improve from hippo and josean and those PRD pigs at the trough...Please Senor Presidente speak out josean is driving us crazy with his whining about the Metro and such

I believe that Leonel, at one point in his career aspired to do great things. Somehow along the way he got caught up in the "Only do things that benefit the Party" mentality which explains why he allows the PLD to waste our resources.

juanb, it is not so much that he wanted to do great things; he wanted to do spectacular things. educating the nation would probably have been the greatest of things, but he had no interest in that. he wanted monumental things, such as the Metro, which could have been attributed to him, and him only. he lived too long in New York, and wanted to make the Dominican Republic a satellite of manhattan. why, look at the police badges: they took the NYPD badge and simply rearranged some of the lettering. at a distance, you cannot tell the difference. are you telling me that we do not have anyone in this country who is artistic and creative enough to design our own police badge? that we have to rip off such a trivial artifact from someone else?

People just don't get it ! Leonel doesn't care what his people (or anyone else) say about him and his party. It has all gone to his elite head, in his final term. His plans now are how to get his wife elected in 2012. He has lost all focus and really knows the dominican people will not do a thing to him as they are mostly sheep (followers, not leaders). No one wants to rock the boat, for fear of falling from "GRACE".

And the METRO is the lid of the garbage can!

Juango you comment is as precise as the scalpel of neurosurgeon!

Many of you might think that I would be gloating at these comments and feeingl a sense of vindication, and be exhibiting an I told you so attitude, not so.

Honestly, I wish the PLD and Leonel had been successful because as much as I hate and despise them, I love my people and country more. I would have been happy to eat Crow and have Chauncey tell me you see josean you were totally wrong about Leonel and the PLD look how the great things they have done.

Well that is the problem, we have too much democracy. It is now manipulated by the parties and people get to hear what the parties want. It is all about I am better off with this party or that party.

Leonel wants to have PRD take over, screw up and he or his wife run.

Sadly it happens every where. If not how do you explain Bush 2004.

A reminder :

Rafael Hipólito Mejía Domínguez

On his watch, the economy shrank, poverty increased, and a sharp increase in the external debt was created.
An aircraft used by the President's security chief was seized by the US Drug Enforcement Administration at Miami International Airport.
PRD a nominally socialst Dominican Revolutionary Party on a program to increase health, education, and social security services through tax hikes,

Mejia's term also saw the collapse of Baninter, the country's second largest privately held commercial bank, in a US$2.2 B banking fraud and government corruption scandal. The subsequent shortfall was equal to 12%-15% of GDP, resulting in massive inflation (42%) and the devaluation of the Peso by over 50%.

In contrast:

Leonel Antonio Fernández Reyna

During his term in office, Fernández's political agenda was one of economic and critical reform. He helped enhance Dominican participation in hemispheric forums, such as the Organization of American States and the Miami Summit. The Dominican economy enjoyed an average growth rate of seven percent, the highest in Latin American in that period, along with countries like South Korea. Inflation was stabilized in the low single digits, the lowest in all of Latin America. He served a four-year term as President between 1996 and 2000.

Fernández also began a very personal and visionary plan to run the Dominican Republic. When developers proposed the country's first modern port during his first term, he said that "We can be the Singapore of the Caribbean

In Santo Domingo, he built highways and tunnels and favored foreign investment, but delayed fundamental social reforms, like education and public health

Jander, you conveniently left out the Metro! and please; Hipolito had nothing to do with the collapse of Baninter, simply because he was president when it happened. that is like blaming the collapse of Bear Sterns on George Bush. Baninter had been collapsing for 14 years, which would have included the first Leonel term. the accountants were keeping two sets of books, and had even the shrewdest auditors fooled. so, be careful with accusations which fail the nose test.

Everything happens for a reason, the Dominican Republic is becoming a simile of the United States political system where only Democrat and Republicans rule. If one goes back to the Dominican history well find that our political diversity was great. We had many majority parties and they all gained generous amount of votes in the elections, lately is all up to PLD and PRD; when we have many different parties with great candidates.
When this kind of scenario emerges in any political system, (El fanatismo) grows, people do not vote on conscience of what is best but as a matter of competing with one another. I was in our country last May and saw and asked and most people dint have a clue as of why they were voting, except that they did not wanted to bring PRD back to power.
I agree with what the article says that the PLD is going awry with the ideologies of Juan Bosh, the new management has given a 360-degree downturn to the parties philosophies. Is sad. http://nicolasdelvalle.wordpres

actually, ndelvalle, a lot of people knew why they were voting; because politicians gave them pigs, poultry and waterfowl, and copious amounts of Brugal. not to mention hard currency, in various denominations. they also voted for the guys who played the better selection of bachata songs from the tops of the flatbed floats. and, last but not least, the more appealing array of pulchritudinous women, all dressed to thrill, who cavorted atop the flatbed platforms.

Re:

BTW we did have a brief example of a pristine democratic government in 1963 when Juan Bosch
was in power and also the brief experiment in ciudad nueva when Caamaño was president, both cases were after Trujillo and long ago, I was way too young then but people who lived under
those governments always remember them and reminisce about how good they were.
Also when Antonio Guzman first took power in 1978 after Balaguer he started real well but then fizzled back to the old corrupt ways which caused his self immolation.
