SANTO DOMINGO.- Starting January consumers who steal electricity and the distributing companies with misconduct will be penalized, as stipulated in the Electricity Law, warned Electricity superintendent Francisco Méndez Sunday.

He said from that date they’ll start to apply that part of the Law, beginning in the high income and consumption segments and in the barrios with 24 hours of power.

The official also said the Office of the Electricity Prosecutor will penalize third parties who connect illegally to other people’s meter.

did they not say that this law was to have gone into effect in the first months of THIS year? i realise it was delayed until after the election, but what was the excuse thereafter?

Barrio Italia SD where everyone has a meter. They only pay 500RD a month! But most all are related to the Gov. in some way. So who steals the most the family with 2 light bulbs.

Wow! those places are probably the best paying segment of the country.

How about industrial zones (Herrera would be nice to start with)? Oh no, that's my friend's plant over there.

I am concerned about the letter of the law that states: "with misconduct". So, then if I stead power with no proof of "misconduct" then I am thereby exempt from punishment if there is no malicious intent? This was put in for a reason (we just do not know what it is).

Do not expect much because this is just "form without substance" or no teeth.

I am sure that we would all love to see this law enforced. How about a show of hands? How many of you think that it will be enforced?

They must also be hiring source dogs when this law goes into effect, its probably going to be a 24 hour 7 day a week thing to see whose stealing, they're going to be guiding the meters constanly.

We need to be aware, because even if your not doing anything wrong they're going to look for a reason to either extort you out of your money or turn you in just so you can be fined something.

How do they plan on enforcing theft? Are they going to have paid snitches in the barrios.

Exactly where are those barrios with 24 hour energy? I pay religiously all I consume and have lived here 35 years. I can't remember having electricity for 24 hours almost ever. So how come they are so privileged?

marty the barrios with the 24/7 electricity is where all the rich people live, and can pay the top thieves to keep their electricity on. you do know which thieves right, they're LF helpers, staff, idiots, or whatever they are
