SANTO DOMINGO.- Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia said the time has come to launch the South’s region tourism development, including projects in Bahia de las Aguilas, where Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal reportedly said there’s no “inconvenience.”

The statement is the first by the official regarding the controversial issue of construction on the beach at Bahia de las Aguilas; although Monday morning Fernandez Mirabal said studies have determined that the protected area’s shoreline can’t withstand tradition exploitation. “The hotels can be built on the buffer zone at Cabo Rojo, where the Bahia de las Aguilas beach is a short walk away,” he said in the Hoy Mismo program on Channel 9.

Earlier this year former ministers of Tourism Felix Jimenez, and of the Environment Max Puig, staged a public confrontation over Bahia de las Aguilas tourism development.

Garcia also said investments in the millions in the South will be announced in the next few days.

The official said the idea is to obtain economic development in harmony with nature, with the South region having those exceptional conditions to become one of the country’s major tourism regions, and contribute to mitigate its poverty.

Garcia said he’ll meet with Senate president Reinaldo Pared in the next few days, to deal with pending bills and agreements aimed at the South region in order to expedite their debate and approval.

He said the zone urgently needs a genuine tourism development that’ll benefit those provinces’ inhabitants, especially Pedernales, Barahona, Independencia and Bahoruco. “I believe the time has already come to launch the South region’s tourism, and we’re going to work so this becomes a reality. There are dozens of foreign investors interested in investing in that zone," Garcia said in program D `Agenda, Channel 9.

If we don't do something, soon Dominicans will be able to see their beaches only from a far away hillside...

Guide the predators away from Bahia de las Aguilas. The fragile ecosystem there is sufficiently challenged by the vultures that just want to make some money for show and tell.
Just like they have ruined most of the beaches around the island with constant noise, pollution,
jet skis, oil from small craft, and non stop garbage disposal by bathers and tourists alike. Now they want to mess up and ruin one of the few remaining good quality beaches we have left.
Jaime David do not let the song of the false sirens lure you into weakening your stand.
Protect Bahia de Las Aguilas and keep the hungry buzzards circling away from striking!

here they come. soon dominicans will not be allow to go to any beach, because they all will be private beaches. that's why the people from Najayo beach in san cristobal rejected the proposol to remodel the beach, because they knew that if that ever happens they will not be allow in it.

Please remember that this beach is PERFECT JUST AS IT IS, within a National Park and a UNESCO Biosphere. Neither of those designations shoild be violated by greedy developers.
Build the hotel somewhere else and go there for the day by yola!

There is a law (I think it's part of the constitution) that every beach, even if developed into tourist resort, must have a PUBLIC ACCESS...Given that,. what does it matter if they develop the area or not...?

Jacirez i do not know if you have traveled to Dominican Republic recently if you go to punta cana how many resorts leave a public access none. go to puerto plata and anywhere else for that matter and there is no access. the only place i think is Las terrenas and that is probably there is not any big resorts yet except for Bahia principe in el portillo. so why is there so much interest in developing this area DO you actually think is to benefit the country NO obviusly is to benefit all the politicians pockets

Think it's very sad they're trying to destroy every last bit of coastline for their own personal benefits. They can just as well pour that money into tourist development sites that have already been built and are struggling.

soon there will be no beaches for the public. Honestly, these fools don't want to see the damage they are doing to DR. No hay peor ciego que el que no quiere ver. Totally outrageous!!
