SANTO DOMINGO.- Customs director Miguel Cocco on Friday urged the National Police agents to serve their country with dignity and greatness, and that they and the military are the reserves of the institutional morals and on which the country will always count on.

Cocco, recognized by the Police for his merits, honesty and cooperation as a official who “dignifies Dominican Republic’s civil service,” praised Police chief Guillermo Guzmán’s tenure, whom he said has given police service institutionality, dynamism and professionalism. "You’re the guardians of citizen security, the country’s most important reserve, who must serve their motherland with honor and adherence to the laws, characteristics that distinguish and strengthen general Guzmán Fermín’s management."

The recognition of the Customs chief included a parade of several squadrons of police agents and cadets in the 2 de Marzo Academy, Hatillo, San Cristóbal (south).

Yes, they're trying to pull an early april fools joke, really, common someone really needs to shed some light into these peoples heads, do they not understand that they need to pay them good so they can feel that the job they do is worth it, and not having to think about how they're going to feed they're families or survive from month to month, this is insane.

The key to an efficient and honest Police Dept. is a decent salary with the chance for advancement not based solely on connections. Let's take some of the money from our thieving politicians and pay our Police a fair and good living wage. Then and only then can we really hold them accountable for their actions.

Cocco seems to be one of the few honest officials in the RD. The senator from Bani is another. These men have worked with dignity and pointed out corruption such as the Custom officials who were illegally working with drug traffickers and airport employees at JFK were fired!

All other RD politicians seem to be "playing the game for gain". We have been to the DNCD Notre offices to point out drug dealers and drug houses who micro-traffick but for years the DNCD agents drag their feet and do not put an end to the drug family network that operations in my barrio of Los Platanitos (Ensache Caonabo) in Santiago. In fact, the police come by to salute the drug dealers in the Choppo Pichardo gang of Tigres and collect money but never make arrests.

While RD Gov officials criticize the US Gov, our own Ambassador Fannin does nothing from the US side to improve the RD and the plight of poor children both Dominican & Haitian who must live in drug infested communities.

gmiller261,

You are so right:
"The Bush administration has committed $290 billion of the $700 billion rescue package. Yet for all this activity, no formal action has been taken to fill the independent oversight posts established by Congress when it approved the bailout to prevent corruption and government waste.
"The financial world was fixated on Capitol Hill as Congress battled over the Bush administration's request for a $700 billion bailout of the banking industry. In the midst of this late-September drama, the Treasury Department issued a five-sentence notice that attracted almost no public attention: Administration officials had just given American banks a windfall of as much as $140 billion.
What do you know? Corruption is not limited to the DR. Who knew???

There is widespread corruption in the US. Remember, we had an oilman in the white house who thought what was good for him (an oilman) was good for the country (i.e. US $4.95 a gallon gas in the US). The good thing about a true democracy is that the voice of the people will eventually overcome...

It is amazing how all these GOP free marketers on CNBC who push for REDUCED GOV and DE-REGULATED industries such as in banking... are now all of a sudden want the US Gov - Taxpayer to come to the rescue of companies like Citi Bank that took on too much risk, foreclosed on working families & laid off 50,000 workers BUT who now as taxpayers must rescue a company that screwed their families 3x times. Really ironic?

Cocco is right even though pointing out what should be obvious. But the dis-connect is that none of these police nor DNCD officials give a dam (especially about poor people of color). And FANNIN is no different and since I am NOT on his payroll I can be un-bias!

Hypocrites
