Zoom Picture

SANTO DOMINGO. – Prisons director Manuel de Jesus Perez confirmed that convicted ex- banker Luis Alvarez Renta, sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Baninter bank fraud case, recently attended his daughter’s wedding, a practice he said is “nothing new.”

The Central Bank lawyer in the case Baninter, Carlos Salcedo, said Alvarez Renta, prisoner, was released from the prison at Najayo to attend the nuptials.

"That has always occurred, it’s nothing new, he went to the wedding, but was immediately returned to his cell, whenever Mr. Alvarez Renta has left the jail has been by order of the judge who’s responsible for the application of his sentence," Perez said.

I'm sure the only prisoners that get to take a "holiday" are the ones who have a few dollars to pass around, dosen't matter if they are drug dealers or bankers.

To be fair, the days spent out and walking around should be tacked onto the end of the sentence, otherwise the full sentence is not served.

Back in the mid 80s, when there was a scandal in Jorge Blanco's presidency, a person well known to my family had to do some time because of the findings. We went to visit him in prison, and his "cell" was none the less than a 1 bedroom studio, where he had Air conditioner, private bathroom, Cable TV, personal fridge... The guy of course, had money... I was only a child at that time so, children say the darnest things don't day? So I said while I was there "this is not a jail, I could live like this".. I am sure that now, the "cell" Mr Renta returned to after the wedding, has 100 times more commodities that this other individual had back in the mid-80s. $$$ money moves things and gets you comfortable everywhere in the world... you think Michael Vick (from the American Football Falcons) or the Executives at Enron that actually had to do time are in the traditional "cells".. think again.

Zac325 is correct the only ones who get this special treatment are wealthy bankers, politicians or drug dealers with money!

Nevertheless, the same is true in the USA for the elite & is NOT just about money but in the USA it is about status! For example, Mike Tyson went to a IN prison was diliberatly placed with the general population of inmates in a regular prison whereas the same is true for Micheal Vick ... they are with the boyz on the block despite their wealth. However, when white execs like Micheal Milken, Martha Stewart or others from MCI Worldcom, Enron are sent to CLUB FED.

In the RD, it is just about money but in the USA justice is twofold about color and money! Whereas if you are the wrong color (i.e. non-white) then your wealth means nothing ...just sent Micheal Vick a memo and he will respond. That is, if you really wan to know the truth.
