Santo Domingo.- All eyes are on the Ciudad Nueva courthouse, where Sentencing judge Saulo Diaz expects he surrender of the fugitive ex bankers Manuel A. Pellerano and Felipe Mendoza, whose attorney Fernando Langa had pledged they would voluntarily come in at 10 a.m. Thursday to begin serving an eight year prison sentence, after being convicted in the US$900 million fraud in the collapsed bank Bancredito.

Two senior Police officers accompanied by several agents were seen leaving the courthouse in a twin cabin pickup truck, reportedly headed for the residences of Pellerano and Mendoza.

The Bancredito failure, together with that of the banks Baninter and Mercantil, cost the Dominican taxpayers US$2.5 billion and sent the economy into a tailspin in 2003.

Let's be honest... Since when do millionaires in the DR serve anything more than 8 hours in jail? Prudent advice is for the police officers to go with a cardiologist so that they could be taken to the closest airport to flight out to FL due to "cardiac problems."

We just have to remember the case of Baninter and Vivian Lubrano. I think the same will happen with Bancreditos,s.
