SANTO DOMINGO.- Around 1.5 million Dominicans who live in areas without telecomm services will benefit from the proposed Rural Broadband Connectivity (telephones and high speed Internet in households), because starting today they'll enter the era of knowledge and can develop new businesses in their communities.

The initiative's formal launch will be at 11a.m. in the border town Comendado (west), in an event that will leave open the telephone service and high-speed Internet in homes of the first 71 communities selected.

Vice president Rafael Alburquerque will head the event, together with Indotel president Jose Rafael Vargas, and CODETEL president Oscar Pena.

This man has a habit of being a great leader. He uses his position & authority to continue to invest in infrastructure that will bring opportunities, learnings & good exposure of the Dominican youth to technology. All in all, this can open the eyes of young Dominicans & let them dream to arrive very far in life.

Honestly, I wish this man's example where the norm and NOT the exception in the RD.

Clearly, it is very easy to be a good leader (if one chooses to be a good leader).

No excuses!

It is NOT President Jose's job to ensure reliable electric. He is only executing his goals & strategy of CODETEL. The failure however, is on the part of the RD Gov, Prez LF and various leaders in power.

As former and soon to be again stockholder of AES, I do not want us to supply electric nor distribute electric IF THE RD GOV can NOT cover current debts! Energy suppliers must get paid and get a return on Investment of their infrastructure as well as cover the costs of energy supplied.

Unfortunately, there is no bonafide central planning by the RD Gov but decisions are based on greed, personal gain, corruption & kickbacks (i.e. Metro). Clearly, the basics must be taken care of before add-on investments like the METRO are made.

If the RD Gov was NOT so corrupt then it could produce reliable electric via nuclear power and have much more new school technology for power generation vs. the old school of fossil fuels. The RD could lower energy costs via diverse sources.

Both statements are true. The electricity is a mess that should be fixed in order to be able to use those investments on computers. I wish they just put some hierarchy when addressing situations. But what I was thinking. I FORGOT... they are Poli-"Ticks" or blood suckers.

I know, I know... proper spelling of politics. I just wanted to make a point.

In the 80's an American friend said about the DR that it was a country where you could use a modern fax and a old latrine in the same place.

2008 Change Fax for computer.

You made a statement that is contrary to DR priorities;"as a former and soon to be again stockholder of AES", we don't want to supply or distribute electric power untill the DR gvt pays its
debts of energy and infrastructure.

What infrastructure are you talking about? I thought the govt owned all the infrastructure related to power generating and distribution. If you are refering to DR gvt as a private enterprise then why don't you take it up with the CEO of the co.who gives credit to a bad consumer "risky business.

With all those negatives that you mentioned above which is no doubt true ,Why would any one invest money in a fail state? unless there are loop holes we don't know about .

I would say it again;Have France built and maintain atomic power plants in Haiti & DR and the distribution system acordingly. Generate enogh electricity for both countries and have the respective gvts buy such energy supplied.I know suppliers must get pay & get an investment
retun.
