Santo Domingo.– Protests over an energy crisis are growing violent across the Dominican Republic as residents face nearly 24-hour blackouts that have snarled traffic and forced businesses to close.

Power companies on average are supplying less than half of the 1,960 megawatts the country demands daily. According to Radhames Segura, administrator of the state-owned power company corporation, the crisis is temporary. He blamed mounting debt and faulty equipment.

Privately owned power companies are seeking US$400 million from the government and say they cannot afford the petroleum needed to run electric plants. Police say at least one person has died and dozens have been injured in protests against the crisis.

“Nos estamos volviendo locos, nos estamos ahogando del calor, no podemos dormir, porque nunca hay energía para hacerle frente a tanto calor”, afirmó Fatima Contreras, en Los Mina, tras señalar que la energía es suspendida en ese sector hasta por días enteros.

'Solve the Problems?'....There's not enough educated people in our country to fix it, we elect the same poeple to run the country over and over again and we get the same results. Maybe Sheik Mohamef from Dubai should govern our country.

gatitapequena, don't waste your breath arguing with mental peasants like anthonyc. he posts for shock value, not information. he defines cluelessness. numerous people are paying for electricity, and receiving nothing but elevated bills.
