Santo Domingo .- The Public Works Ministry will inaugurate on Friday the Santo Domingo-Samana highway, built at a cost of more than US$151 million.

The group Autopista del Nordeste, C. by A. built the road called that will be called Juan Pablo II, whose construction began during Fernandez’s first term (1996-2000) and was opened to traffic on June/

The Juan Pablo II 106 kilometer highway has two lanes 3.65 meters wide each and overall width of 8 meters.

It has three toll stations located in Marbella near the Las Americas highway; at Naranjal, and Guaraguao, near the northernmost town Rincon de Molinillos.

This road has been poorly built with no base, water seeping through the middle of the road and the tolls are too costly. Life span 5 years.

It is a great road. Motorcycles go free - mostly local people. Bridges and cuttings are quite an achievement. Bus journey cut by 2 hours and because diesel is reduced fare has come down. It is probably better to repair where necessary in five years.

Fantastic highway! The tolls are much less than the gas and TIME one saves in the trip. I made it from my apartment in La Esperrilla to my House in Cabrera in 2.5 hours! And that was when the road was semi completed back in June!

Now, i can probably get there even faster.

Would like to see it well kept. Everything looks good at first, but it's the maintenance and up-keep that will determine if this is a success or another catastrophe.

cheers,

I just took the road this road two weeks ago while on vacation to the DR and I have to say that it was a great idea to build this road. Last time I went to Samana from Santo Domingo via Autopista Duarte it was a very long trip. This new road is a straight shot from the capital! The tolls, I think are a little expensive, also there are not rest stops, gas stations etc along the way but hopefully in the near future that would flourish.
I also noticed that the road cuts through a HUGE farm of palm trees which are planted in order. They were thousand of palm trees that stretched for least 10km and by the way they were planted you would tell they were not wild palm trees.

Does anyone have any information about that property, who owns it, the history of it and what they do with the trees? Any information, reference or links would be appreciated. I’m just very curious about that place.
Thank you.
