SANTO DOMINGO.- A small plane that left from Santiago’s Cibao International Airport 4 p.m. yesterday with 12 Dominicans on board flying to the Providenciales is missing, said the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute  (Idac).

It said the plane took off at 4:06 p.m. Monday, and later issued a distress signal 40 minutes to the Providenciales Control center, at Turks and Caicos Islands.

In the plane, U.S.-registry N-650LT, traveled Carlos Garcia, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Alexandra Abreu, Maria Abreu, Rosa Tavárez, Rocita Rodriguez, Maritza Hernandez, Ronulfo Herrera, Juana Ramirez and Omar Rojas.

The aircraft was operated by Atlantic Aviation and piloted by Adrián Jiménez. The flight takes approximately an hour and a half.

The Providenciales authorities informed their Dominican pars of the incident, and that the whereabouts of the plane and its occupants is unknown.

Two coastguard vessels from Miami search for the travelers, 16 nautical miles south of the Providenciales.

I hope and pray that everybody is found alive and well. But I have a question. Was the plane involved in drug trafficking? Because Domincan Republic and Haiti are havens for drug transshipment nowadays.

That would depend on what's found on the wreckage, if it's ever found, that is.
