SANTO DOMINGO.- The heads of the Santo Domingo State (UASD) and Haiti State universities yesterday pledged to conduct a census of Haitian immigrants and their legal status.

Franklin Garcia Fermín and Jean Vernet Henry also agreed to include in the investigation the work the Haitians do in Dominican Republic, which aims to bolster relations between both countries.

Garcia said the agreement is historic for both academies, and hopes it will provide concrete data which will help to establish both Haitian and Dominican migratory policies, and spur the development of the two nations.

The agreement is an initiative of the organization Action International, which will fund the investigation.

For his part Haiti State University director Jean Vernet Henry said he’s satisfied with the agreement’s reaches.

Dominican ambassador in Haiti Rubén Silié, who also spoke during the signature, said it’s the first time that both countries agree to conduct a study that’ll provide specific results on Haitian immigration in Dominican Republic.

I also think the 2 million number is exaggerated, but it probably does top the million. It's my understanding that most Haitians hide when they have tried to conduct a census, so I wish them good luck on this project. I think it's because there's still trauma of the 1937 massacre. Per a book I read, the reason it was so easy to identify who the Haitians were at that time was because they were so well documented.

You would not think so if you were living here on Santo Domingo, Chic. Believe me, you can't hardly walk a block without finding dozens of them on your way to any given part of the city, even in the rich neighbourhoods, when in the 90's they were conpiscuous for their absence, and Santo Domingo is not precisely a place where a citizen of the popular class can win its everyday bread easily, much less poor inmigrants, specially when we consider that for a person to live decently on a costly city like this, said person have to possess monthly earnings on the RD$25,000 (US$750) range upwards. So much for our vaunted racism.
