Santo Domingo. - Even before the Santo Domingo Metro's ribbon-cutting, the Transitt Reform Office (Opret) already began the procedures for the bidding to build and operate the second line, as well as for the Santiago-Haina train.

Opret requested two international tender offers on Tuesday, the first to buy a second tunneling machine to continue excavations for the subway, and the second for the construction and operation of the Metro's second line, and the Santiago train.

Opret director Diandino Peña asked that companies or partnerships to present their offers, although the terms for concession aren't specified. "The folder containing the terms of reference will be available in this Office" on Maximo Gomez avenue as of tomorrow Wednesday, until December 29.

How many millions more of add-on costs for excavations does this add to the project? In Chicago, the commuter trains run above ground in the center of major highways and main street arteries. There are many trains that are also elevated (i.e. the EL Train). They saved millions in NOT having to excavations. Does anyone have a clue on this project. I guess the backscratching and under-the-table kickbacks lead to group think!

To me this is sad, when elected officials only act for their own self serving money grabbing selves.

Leonel and his cronies have discovered a true goldmine here in the Domincan Republic.

Money Launderers and Drug smuggling cartels opererate freely and openly without fear of persecution because for a percentage of the profit Leonel, his cronies in power, the police and military turn the other way.

Such a sad state of affairs and no one has the slightest fear of prosecution and in reality wear their thefts and corruption activities of the public coffers like medals.

It was publicly announced that the second metro line will be funded by private enterprise.
Who the hell in their right mind frame would invest in such an up hill business with the world
economic conditions being what they are now?
It is like Ripleys' believe it or not.
If the government does embark again in such a lose lose proposition then....all hope is lost.

TexasBill,

Solving the lack of electricity, water, health care and schools will not help the "funcionarios" bank account in the Cayman, Luxembourg and Swaziland...so; we'll build the metro instead...

generoso, when a government has nothing but contempt for its citizens, it can tell them anything. to say that private investors are going to finance the metro is such rubbish, it defies logic. no subway makes money from fare box receipts. the NYC subway, with millions of daily riders, massive receipts from advertising space, rental of concession stands, and cheap electricity, is heavily subsides by the city. any private consortium that involves itself in a subway is nothing more than a collection of mental patients. it is a ruse; a blatant lie!!

I couldn't agree more.
It is just feeding BS to the ignorant masses that are most likely functionally illiterate anyway, I may sound elitist but this is a fact.
Whenever the next hurricane hits the capital the metro will have to be ridden with a face mask and scuba gear because it will be mostly underwater.

there are guys who posted on this site that the metro will serve 3 million people in the city. they got angry at me for saying that public transportation only serves the people within a narrow corridor, generally a maximum of half a mile from the station. it is not elitist to say that people are functionally illiterate. the fact that people can recognise their written name, or count change at the colmado, does not make them either literate nor numerate. the government keeps people in this state of retrogression, in order to victimise and exploit them, not to mention rob them blind.

There is no money for politicians in a small project such as fixing potholes. Metros are a different animal, altogether.
