Dominican President Leonel Fernández
Zoom Picture

Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernández Reyna is celebrating his 55th birthday today, four months into his current administration.

Fernández was born in Santo Domingo on 26 December 1953, son of the late José Antonio Fernández and Yolanda Reyna Romero.

He was first elected president of the Dominican Republic in 1996, winning in the second round, in an alliance with the PRSC party, beating the late PRD leader José Francisco Peña Gómez. At the time he was one of the youngest leaders in the Americas.

His party, the PLD went on to lose the 2000 elections, and Fernández took on the party leadership following the death of his guide and mentor, Professor Juan Bosch. Leonel Fernández returned to power after a conclusive election victory in 2004.

During this administration, despite being criticized for mega-projects like the Santo Domingo Metro, he was re-elected with 53% of the votes in the 2008 elections.

The presidential press office did not say whether there would be any official celebrations for the president’s birthday this year, as has happened on previous occasions.

33?!? I'm 33 and Leonel looks old enough to be my father. Lembert, you need to get your eyes checked. I wonder if Vivian Lubrano has put any thought into the type of gift she'll be sending Leonel's way in light of his birthday and what not.

Edward, Leonel says that your check is in the mail. he just cannot guarantee that you will ever get it, given the legendary efficiency of the postal service. but, it's the thought that counts.

You often hear people say that it is better to be lucky than good. That is the story of LF. He has not proven to even come close to being a good President. He has just followed really bad ones. Any PLD candidate against Hipolito would have won.

I can not say I am dissapointed with LF, because he was never required to do much. Like an MD that cant make you better, he just makes sure you do not get worse.

So we now measure improvement by not going backwards. General, we are doing great we have not had to retreat. Politics a la French Army WWI.

ABR, it is gratifying to see that DT is closing out the year with brilliant observations such as yours. yes, LF appears good, but only by relativity. if his predecessors had not been abject disasters, the analysis would have been different. for a man with apparently great potential, he has completely underperformed. he has managed to succeed by comparison with buffoons like Hipolito, and that is the sad issue. instead of people making independent judgements of what he has wrought, they reflexively compare him to Hippo, and declare him great by default. the bar has been set so low, he can crawl under it and be declared the winner.

Dread,

Given Chauncey's obsession with virility do you think he was responsible for advising his former (maybe even current) employer to embark upon this policy?

I know this forum is about the DR, but is there any country that is happy with their government?

I mean JFK was loved and the US cried when he was assasinated,

Below is a link to GWB's claim to fame, 'The Patriot Act,' not only did he turn the world against Americas he managed to turn Americans against Americans..

God bless Obama and lets hope he sets the standard for these do nothing leaders .
The last 8 years they could always use the excuse " Look at the Americans'
