Santo Domingo.- Thousands of people from all over the capital and Santo Domingo province made the most of yesterday’s Christmas Day holiday to take a trip on the Metro. Long lines formed as enthusiastic passengers waited to try out the new public transport system.
“We’ve employed full security measures to ensure no-one gets hurt. The capital has emptied and come to ride the Santo Domingo Metro. There has been a massive flow of passengers and we’ve had to work wonders to control the crowds”, said station director Natividad Ruiz.
Many passengers were enthusiastic about the service: “It’s wonderful, we are having a great time, this Metro is interesting, it is the best Christmas gift for a day out with children and relatives”, said an excited Rafaelina Arias after getting on the train, which has been running since Monday in a pre-commercial operation where passengers can try out the service free of charge until January 7th.
Passengers have to comply with a series of rules: they cannot carry arms, alcoholic drinks or eat inside the Metro installations. Twenty-one stations are now operational on the first Metro route, which runs from Villa Mella to Centro de los Héroes.
Rafaela Herrera, who was riding the train with her son, compared it with the Madrid Metro. “This is better and more attractive, as it is new”.
Elderly people, pregnant women and children are given preferential treatment on the Metro.

Elderly people, pregnant women and children are given preferential treatment on the Metro also josean is given his seat of honor up front so he can complain in front of all the passengers who seem to think everything is fine with the new Metro ....as josean screams " Welcome to Metrolandia " in his white jacket with the leather straps and very long sleeves...They roll their eyes and go about their business

As an avid supporter of this project from the beginning I am pleased to hear it is doing well.
It's success is yet to be decided, but once the public realizes how efficient transportation can be in the 21st century they will embrace the concept.
Infrastructure is one of the best investments any city, state or country can make.
The services that are still lacking such as education, health etc. will fall into place eventually.

i find it highly entertaining that Jander offers that "education will fall into place EVENTUALLY." sadly, the rest of the world is not waiting at the metro station for the DR to get itself educated; it is moving ahead, in many cases ,on foot.

I suppose I am the perpetual cynic because I firmly believe that the Metro is a very expensive International Public Relations Gimick designed primarily to blow the DR Whistle.
This "Project" and the one to follow serves a very limited segment of the Public at large.
The massive quantity of money spent could have been putto a much better use by funneling it toward better health facilities, expansion and efficient management of Electrical, Sewage, and Water Distribution systems in the country.
When the various Administrations, which govern this country, begin to focus on the TRUE needs of the country and it's population, then I will be the first to lend them my maximum support.
Until that happens, I will continue to critisize both the government and the people equally.

Yes, Chevez has ordered a million computers
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/20..../europe/EU-Portugal-Venezuela.phpThere will be more computers in Venez schools than anywhere else in the World in proportion to population.
Perhaps DR will follow with OPC or similar.
EU country Potugal is helping out.
GC seems to need something else to complain about now the Metro is open!

TexasBill, i can now breathe a sigh of relief. your conspicuous absence over the last few days had me concerned that you might be ill. i hope that you are in the pink of health, and a belated Merry Christmas. all the best for the new year

Congrats to the country.
Having said that, the real problem is not on what is done, but on how it's done. It's great that we have a metro. Yet nobody can deny that it was over valued, and that there are many other priorities in the country. However now that it's done, lets enjoy it and conserve it. And I will pray we have enough electricity for the damn thing.

TexasBill made a good point. The idea of a metro is good, but the DR goverment is totally disconnected with the mainstream. The goverment has ignored what is called "The Urgency of Now". But I give the DR goverment some credit for its audacity to create a false sense of excitement. When reality sets in, the euphoria will give way to emptyness, disillusion, and mountain of criticism from the same people who are, today, praising the project.

eloquently put, whysmitty. new stuff always attracts attention. it is like christmas. give a kid a new toy, and he plays with it for an hour. after the novelty wears off , he returns to his old tricycle and ball, which he has had forever. just like john public will return to the carritos.

antonioj,
The metro map is missing something. There should be two extra stops dedicated to the Haitian Heroes who freed the island from slavery. I am talking about Toussaint Louverture and Dessalines. DR should be grateful to Haiti.
Also, you are missing another thing. Can you show the poverty map of the Dominican Republic.?

Metro vs Poverty
Imagine Cuba without the embargo. Why is Cuba taking better care of its people (health care, education, life span, etc...) in spite of an embargo? Cuba even beats the U.S. in certain indexes.
LIFT THE FREAKING EMBARGO and LET CUBA SHINE EVEN MORE !!!!
That's the arrogance of the U.S. If you don't abide by their rules, they will either kidnap you like Aristide or they willl put an embargo on your country.
Let these three great leaders rule the region: ARISTIDE + CASTRO + CHAVEZ = Perfect together for the Western Hemisphere . They are perfect together for reduction of poverty.
