People who lived in the expropriated areas were told to either accept the price offered for their land or prepare to be forcefully evicted. In this way, the Navy took over 75 per cent of the island, including some of the most arable land. Almost the entire eastern half of the island, now dubbed "Camp Garcia," was turned into a firing range for the U.S. military. On the western end of Vieques, the Navy set up an ammunition facility. What remained to the residents was a quarter of the island's land area, squeezed between the two military zones.

The continuous bombing of Vieques for six decades has had all the harmful effects that one would expect from such a practice. The land, sea and air are contaminated with highly toxic chemicals. Studies have shown an unusually high rate of cancer and a rare heart ailment called vibroacoustic disease, which is linked to high levels of noise, among the island's 9400 residents. In May, 1999, after information about the use of depleted uranium on Vieques became public, the Navy admitted firing 273 depleted uranium projectiles at the Vieques test site in 1998, during training for the bombing of Yugoslavia.

Did you see the Democratic party candidates spend countless campaign time in PR trying to secure those all important delegate votes? Do you think they care about PR? Do you think your summations on any topic are taken seriously by any literate person? After all you are the same person who stated that New York is heavily subsidized by the federal government when in fact New York contributes far more to the federal government than it ever takes back in grants or subsidies. You also "proudly" stated that your parents left Cuba via Eastern Airlines, first class, remember that lie? For the record Eastern Airlines flew out of Cuba to Tampa and Miami only, on twin prop Silver Falcon planes that had no "first class" cabins. Stop making it so easy to debunk your rhetoric, you are boring us.

I have a lot of respect for the Puerto Rican people, but the recent election of Fortu~no is a very backward step. He got elected because people where fed up with Mr. Vila and he is under inditment by Georgie's "non-political justice department."
Fortu~no is a right wing republican supported by the Miami, and San Juan Cuban mafia who are the people who have been setting the political agenda in Puerto Rico since 1968.
However, the Miami and Florida Cuban Mafia in general were slicker than the Puerto Ricans they saw the handwriting on the wall and got on the Obama bus. Puerto Ricans in their simbolic primary in June vote overwhemingly for Hillary. Now they compounded their mistake by electing a governor that's a republicanito. They will suffer the cold shoulder of Washignton for the next four years, especially with limited federal resources, Obama like any other leader will reward his friends first.

Despite the Spanish translation of the term "commonwealth", Puerto Rico's relationship with United States is not a Compact of Free Association (which is the case for the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands). As sovereign states, these islands have full right to conduct their own foreign relations, while the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has territorial status subject to United States congressional authority under the Constitution's Territory Clause, “to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory… belonging to the United States.” [

Let me reiterate my previous opinions; PR n DR have a common history...PR was settled by the same natives; If I'm not mistaken, Ponce de Leon sailed from to DR govern PR, etc. In the 18 n 19 Centuries, hundreds of PR's emigrated to DR, to work and live, many stayed; They were called "paisas", and were prominent in the eastern part of DR: Romana, San Pedro, Higuey....
My point is this Chavez is a dictator with Socialist jargon; yet, still a tyrant. Who needs to hob-nob with proponents of philophies that have proven to be idealist? And only work to the detriment of the greater good. Once you give everyone something for nothing, there's no motivation to excel. Also, can you rob Peter to pay Paul?

Since PR is technically a commonwealth of the U.S. and therefore part of the U.S. and Fortuno, if I recall correctly, a pro-statehood politician, it makes sense that he wouldn’t invite Chavez to the Island and go against current U.S. politics. I’m not sure that inviting Chavez to an inauguration would be considered a “negotiation with foreign countries” mentioned by a previous poster but it would not be the wisest political move for good relations with the U.S. government. As far as all the comments from time2rize and especially ArsenioALembertJr: “ *** I grew up in NYC where I dealt with Boricuas, so I feel their pain. They deserve to be free. At this point, PR has way too many ties both politically and economically to separate. If at some point in the future the majority decides it’s in their best interest to separate, more power to them.
As far as the whole Vieques issue, I’m not any kind of expert of the matter and it’s a shame the Island was used by the U.S. for bombing practice. However, from what I understand after they left and gave the Island back to the residents the standard of living dropped dramatically due to the loss of the military money that was keeping the local economy alive. So while I’m glad that they’re no longer using the Island for bombing practice and hopefully the local ecology can recover, to be fair the vocal few that complained loud enough for the military to pull out of Vieques, and for the most part Fajardo also screwed over a lot of the locals.

You yourself state that the majority of them chose commonwealth status. Now why exactly should Puerto Rico change it’s political affiliations to satisfy a bunch on New Yoricans? Does it even make sense that Ricans that were probably born in the U.S. and have only vacationed in PR to want independence? So are they going to renounce their U.S. citizenship and move back? Doubtful… At this point, from what little I’ve read concerning census statistics there are more people that consider themselves Puerto Rican of either 1st, 2nd etc generation that live in the U.S. then on the Island. Furthermore, according to political information and vote counts, I believe that only about 2-3% of the island consider themselves independent party. So basically the whole idea that a few Ricans should conduct what would basically be terrorist acts to overrule the majority and dictate politics for the whole Island is ridiculous. Continued..

That doesn't include the $45.7 million US taxpayer welfare given in cuban democracy grants or the millions wasted on Radio Marti. Statehood would be an economic disaster for the Island.
Independence would just creat another failed nation.
If they were smart they would just keep quiet and continue to fly under the radar and suck up more money from the Federal Teet!
Chavez is the democratic elected president of Venezuela and should be respected as such... he has wild ideas but they're not without justification...
The governor of PR serves as speudo-president for the island so it isn't beneath the level of other presidents to attend
and please... enough about vieques!!!

Independence is the only way for these noble and courageous people to go!
Do you discount that the Puerto Rican vote in central Florida is what won the state for Obama and not the south Florida Cuban vote. Obama won the Hispanic vote in Florida but not the Cuban vote. It was the influx of Puerto Ricans moving to Florida in the last calender year that made the difference.
Back in the day All AIRLINES seats were 1st class.
Those PR's who moved to Florida are Mostly transplants from NYC.
Who cares if they Voted for Obama? They also voted for Carter. And we all know how well that ended.
Good comeback, I'm sure that's what you meant. If all seats were first class then why did you feel the need to mention it. Sir, I make a living catching people in lies, five days a week 8+ hours a day. Again, stop making it so easy.

D,
I have not studied the results of the actual break down of the Florida vote, although I have heard that the Puerto Rican votes were significant in those areas during this election cycle.
If you have any links to that information I would greatly appreciated. It would be a marvelous thing if Puerto Ricans and Dominicans can keep the Batistianos in check!
More than 125,000 Puerto Ricans moved from Puerto Rico to Florida since the last national election. Again, please, stop making it so easy to debunk your farcical facts.
Just proves your jealousy!!!

"Lie-onel Fernabdez a world renowned expert on keeping people in the dark will assist Obama with coping without electricity!"

Eccuse the 'Wiki" but it was the best simple explanation I could finr
Despite the Spanish translation of the term "commonwealth", Puerto Rico's relationship with United States is not a Compact of Free Association (which is the case for the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, and the Marshall Islands). As sovereign states, these islands have full right to conduct their own foreign relations, while the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has territorial status subject to United States congressional authority under the Constitution's Territory Clause, “to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory… belonging to the United States.” [

Chill:

As far as the whole Vieques issue, I’m not any kind of expert of the matter and it’s a shame the Island was used by the U.S. for bombing practice. However, from what I understand after they left and gave the Island back to the residents the standard of living dropped dramatically due to the loss of the military money that was keeping the local economy alive. So while I’m glad that they’re no longer using the Island for bombing practice and hopefully the local ecology can recover, to be fair the vocal few that complained loud enough for the military to pull out of Vieques, and for the most part Fajardo also screwed over a lot of the locals.
Ignorant, racist and Jealous is no way to go through life.

You finally got it!
I admire when a man confessess and sees the error of his ways!
You must feel great after you got that monkey of your back!
For someone who is so in tune with your financial tax obligations going to unmeritorious sources, I find it ominous that you haven't complained of the $65,000,000 worth of welfare given to the larcenous cuban-American National Foundation, (just one of the many cuban exile groups sucking on the teat of the American taxpayer) only 13% of which has been used in initiatives of assistance to the cuban people. That doesn't include the $45.7 million US taxpayer welfare given in cuban democracy grants or the millions wasted on Radio Marti. It seems that your watchdog fiscal conservancy for the US taxpayer does not get in the way of your political ideology towards your welfare sucking US cuban political groups. Stop the welfare checks for the thieving cuban political exile groups now!!!!!!!!!!! Hypocrisy is the bastion of all virtuous and intellectually challenged zealots as yourself.
