The poster for Monday's demonstration "In black against impunity".
Santo Domingo.- Under the slogan “Dressed in black against impunity”, representatives of several youth organizations are holding a protest against the pardons issued by president Leonel Fernández and the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Sun Land case.
The event is planned for today, Monday 29th December at 4:00 p.m. in La Lira Park on Santo Domingo’s Lincoln Avenue, at the intersection with Lope de Vega Avenue, and participants will dress in black as a sign of “mourning”.
The organizers and their supporters, which include the Frente Amplio de Lucha Popular (Falpo), are calling on all citizens to turn out and reject the presidential pardon and the Supreme Court’s sentence, which declared the unconstitutionality recourse against the multi-million dollar loan contracted with Sun Land as “inadmissible”.
The organizers also include a group of young people “committed to the need for a country where the dignity of its inhabitants is respected”, according to the Falpo press release.
The president pardoned Vivian Lubrano de Castillo, convicted in the Baninter fraud case, transport union leaders Casimiro Antonio Marte Familia (Antonio Marte), Milcíades Amaro Guzmán and Gervasio de la Rosa, as well as former government official Pedro Antonio Franco Badía, convicted in the Plan Renove fraud case.

FANTASTIC!!! it's the role of an active civil society to keep the political society in check. I hope there is HUGE turn out to this event.
Unlikely that anything will happen b/c of it, but next time the politicians may be more apprehensive. There should also be another protest against the End of the Year Bonus against the C.C. judges.

Leonel is confronted by a tightrope situation. you can rest assured that there will be many persons equipped with video contraptions at this little tete a tete today. should he call out the forces of intimidation to quench the enthusiasm of the demonstrators, it is not going to play well in north america and europe; actually, it will play well in very few places. he best allow them to have their moment, lest the DR be portrayed as a tyrannical dictatorship on the six o clock news , and prospective tourists rethink their desires to come here, opting for more tranquil destinations like bermuda and antigua.

Cibaeno and Baldoria, it is about time! this cannot continue unchecked. this is not governance by any semblance of consensus. it is megalomania, pure and simple. it leads to the inevitable question; What next?

yes it deserves to be protested as a political decision it suxed ....it just gives the PRD and their stooges like Hippo and josean a chance to come rising out of their coffins

Your guess is as good as mine but I sincerely feel that Leonel underestimates the Dominican population's potential for violence. I don't want things to get out of hand in DR but its almost as if the actions of the current administration are goading the Dominican people into doing the unthinkable. How much can one be pushed before they start pushing back? We might soon find out. This planned protest has the potential to be a pandora's box. Mark my words there will be street violence. There's just to much pent up already. What remains to be seen is exactly how much it will escalate.

Wow, I need to send my winter jackets to hell. Goully is agreeing w/ Dread and the other progressives :-)
The other thing that we can try to do is organized the DOminican Diaspora to be more politically involved. If we have protests in front of the DOminican Embassies, COnsulates, and missions, that will raise even more attention to this catastrophe in governance.
Anyone in NY want to lead this effort? I can send you many emails of our brethen in economic exile who may join in.

There's a bunch of people on here that swear they're patriots and that they love DR but when someone makes a post about organizing for whatever reason you get not so much as a peep from them. This is the perfect vehicle to get members of the diaspora together but instead all they want to do on here is talk crap about haitians, argue the most trivial of points, etc..

I strongly agree with the protest. The only problem I have with it is that is was organized by FALPO, which, based on previous activities, is not a group that I would want to support, just because they got this one right.

In my humble opinion the protest is a great concept and the organizers should be admired for standing up to these rediculous pardons.
The sons and daughters of these theives are living it up on the money their fathers and mothers stole and mearly bankrupted this country.
LF isn't stupid , so by letting these people go free let's hope it was because they provided imformation that will help recoup some of the money or lead to more arrests.
If not I have to beleive that this wench is a relative of his wife.. that would be the only other thing I could think of to justify such a stupid act.

My question is: What is Prez LF's motivation?
Could it be that those pardoned actually channeled millions to LF and his re-election campaign and thereby he fills a duty to issue pardons and keep a lid on the pandora's box?
Could it be that even during the charges, trial and conviction that theses criminals were cool, calm and collected because they had been promised a pardon if and only if ...they kept their mouths shut!
Meanwhile, Prez LF has been attempting to put pressure on the US for explaining & taking more ownership of the global financial crisis but allow LF to lead the charge at "getting to the bottom of US corruption that led to the global financial crisis". Also, LF wants a global reserve for poorer countries like the RD who will be more negatively impacted (even though he stated the RD was immune).
Now, where in the hell is our US rep (FANNIN) & staff & Y R they NOT making a stand supporting freedom of speech & protests? WORTHLESS!

that he will be re-elected again. That is what power does to your brain, hence the reason the US have only 2 terms
