Christmas basket handout in barrio (file photo).
Santo Domingo.- President Leonel Fernández canceled a visit scheduled to the eastern region yesterday to hand out Christmas baskets to poor families, according to the president’s press office, which gave no reason for the change of plans.
Last week it was announced that the president would tour the provinces of Hato Mayor, La Romana and San Pedro de Macorís, but the residents of these eastern regions were left waiting for the president, although the baskets were handed out.
Without providing detailed information, they were told that “weighty matters of state” had prevented Fernández from taking part in the Christmas basket handouts in the east.
The news of the suspension of the president’s visit was released by the National Palace on Friday night, shortly after deputies postponed the approval of the 2009 budget and Congressional president Julio César Valentín spoke to the president.

maybe one of Leo's lackeys sold the Christmas baskets on the Duarte, to enhance the Christmas bonus packages. they probably deemed 600,000 pesos to be a pittance which needed enlarging.

This is a classic example of a president who is disconnected with his people. Just the gang of a few is looting the public treasury. If Leonel has found time to travel all over the world with his entourage of crooks, then why can't he even visit a region of DR. This is sickening. Shame on Leonel !!!!

Josean:
If you ever want to have any credibility whatsoever, which currently you don't have (I, for one, see you as a stooge of the PRD) then you must first denounce the criminality of the PRD, as so many of the supporters of the PLD have done by speaking out about the policies of the President and the PLD. As long as you continue to post your angry (jealous?) comments about the current government, while claiming that your PRD is the answer, no one will, or should pay attention to you.

I have denounced the actions of the PLD for the past 4 months and will continue to do so when I think they do something inappropriate or dishonest. I am not afraid to point out that the emperor has no clothes. Why don't you go back to your constant whining about about the Metro and pray for the return of the thugs from the PRD?

As an American who has lived a good part of the past 20 years here in La Romana, I can honestly say the current situation here in the DR is so inept, corrupt and possibly without a possibility to be corrected.
Basic needs are not provided, roads and health care are an after-thought, crime at all levels is rampant and the political dsicourse here is only who's to blame.
Forget the two party system and forge a coaltion that sets forth, with priorities, all the needs. And then tackle them together as a nation.
Have the politicains be accountable or set term limits and get them out.
The pride and hard work of the Dominican culture needs to be pride by a pride to succeed into the future. Agricultural profits through exporting fruits and vegetables is so simple a plan to yet there is no effort to develope it. Build schools and hire teachers to spark innovation not just reading and writing. Hire adequate police to cut the drug trafficing. Fix all the roads for the public safety.

sadly, josean, the only priority is to loot the country's treasure. like walnut, i have 20 years of exposure to this great island, and nothing has fundamentally changed. the cheerleaders whoop it up every time a skyscraper gets inaugurated, but fail to realise that the building will probably be paralysed by the same power outages of the 1970s. they tell you that Dominicans are "living large" every time a Hummer or a Bimmer go by, failing to realise he is just a few miles from the cavernous pothole which will disable his suspension. the Metro is a source of pride; nobody wonders what will happen if it suffers a mechanical malfunction. it takes sometimes 4 days to repair familiar technology such as an electrical transformer; what will happen when a new-fangled train starts to fall apart? yes, walnut; there has been no accent on preparation, education, nor forward thinking. i despair for the future unless new minds prevail.

I was at a handout in Samana. No-one goes hungry at XMas in DR. What a change from other countries such as the USA. I was there at Xmas in the USA. A meagre bowl of weak soup and dried out out of date bread was handed out. Here I have seen pork and chicken!
DR is a great generous society.

abc200 i couldn't agree with you more, unfortunately thats how it is in the USA you will go hungry on a holiday if you don't have any food unless you can get to one of those places that give you food and ofcourse its food thats been expired, mostly canned foods and most of these canned foods are peoples old cans that have been taking up shelf space in their pantry which half the time their no good, but ofcourse someone who's hungry is not going to complain, and then theirs no meats, milk or eggs included, which they say in America those are not necesity items, so yes in the DR they're really lucky.

DR has got hooked on globalisation that is causing increased hugner:
The the relationship between globalization and poverty is important.
Vandana Shiva has studied this extensively
I think if you add together the people who want to eat and live consciously, who want to reduce the human ecological footprint on the planet, who want to do less harm to other human beings -- because every economic system that does violence to the planet also violates the rights of fellow human beings -- creates a powerful force in the world. I think as this information becomes more coherent and moves more quickly a conscious shift will take place. A year ago people would never have believed those of us who were saying all these measures of financial growth are fictitious. It's just a bubble waiting to burst. Twenty years ago I started to organize rallies of half a million farmers in the street to declare that the agra-industrial system would kill our farmers.

It was a death knell for our farmers and a recipe for hunger. People didn't believe it. Today the farmers are committing suicide. Today the food prices have risen. Food sovereignty and local food systems are back on the agenda and that reveals the incoherence of the dominant corporate system.
