The Police said 534 people were searched, but immediately released after verifying that they didn’t have any pending wants or warrants.

If it is only against the law to carry a weapon visibly then why is a search needed?

Prez LF and these laws are nothing but a Trojan horse as the RD take steps to end democracy right under Fannin's nose! Whose on watch for the US Gov in the RD? Is Fannin hiding in the embassy in la capital?
The ban was on weapons being displayed which could be viewed as an inherent threat.. But strangely, they are looking for concealed weapons even when they were acquired legally as well as knives, switchblades etc. Afterwards, the next round will include going into houses and taking weapons. In the end, LF can maintain power even without a constitutional amendment!
Now, they have not come into my barrio and taken "illegal pistolas" from Tigueres like Choppo Pichardo who is dealing drugs in the name of the RD Gov from Los Platanitos (Ensanche Caonabo) in Santiago.
All the while Fannin, & staff are cluess as the RD becomes a offshore territory for Hugo Chavez!
If the Dominicans were white folks in Soviet Georgia then Fannin would protests about violations of human right

The question is, are the legally gun packing public being properly trained for concealed carry or gun ownership, I'm sure there are a lot of hot heads out there who should not own or process firearms GUNS ALCOHOL AND DRUGS DON'T MIX. Although Guns have always been portrait as the villain, being a weapon, tool for both hunting and self defense purposes and yes, criminal intent the weapon of choice. More should be aimed at the Human element HOLD FIREARM OWNERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THERE ACTIONS after all guns don't go off by them selfs in the first place. the powers that may be....Should go back to the basic rule of law..NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW and START ENFORCING LAWS FROM THE TOP DOWN, BE AN EXAMPLE. People in possession of stolen / non-registered firearms, Gun owners under the influence of DUGS or ALCOHOL should face stiff fines with mandatory jail sentences. With Gun ownership comes a MORAL RESPONSIBILITY. It would be nice to target Tigres big and small year round.

This would not be so bad if the government truly had the best intentions in mind, but we know they don't. They are saying basicly, we are taking away your rights to make you "safe" all of a sudden the Government is acting in the best interest of the people. That alone should make Dominicans suspicious. This is just a major effort to line the pockets of government workers, a kind of "Christmas bonus".

As much as I hate to admit it, your right. The Dominican Gov. should start by leading by example "CLEAN HOUSE".
It's amazing how under "WERE HERE TO PROTECT YOU FROM YOUR SELFS". Don't they realize the Holidays bring the best / worst in people mucho dinero is circulating so this brings robbery, thefts and crime up in general , what else is new. Anybody in Law Enforcement will tell you a QUICK FIX is not the way to go....Local Law Enforcement know who the local criminals are. It's up to the Dominican Police, Courts, Prisons and Government to solve this problem once and for all.

I don't have all the answers, but.....From what I'm seeing is pretty simple, the general Public has no respect for the Politicians, the Law or the Police who are sworn to protect them. It's no wonder People take the Law into their own hands and with sometimes drastic and terrible consequences. One does have a GOD given right to protect your Family, yourself and property from evil and the criminal element. The million dollar question is...To what extreme. Law enforcement should target the Tigres and delinquents 24/7 year round jail them [work prisons] and restore public confidence, once done maybe just maybe the public would then disarm its self and Law Enforcement and the Military would stop these random searches, and pay-offs to turn the other cheek.

But the fact is, it will have a diminishing effect on violence. less people will be armed, just not to have the hassle. That avoids possible, shootings not related to robbery.
So the # will be less and they will call it a victory. See we told you so. The criminals who use guns #s may stay the same or increase. So now they have to be out in the street to get the results they want. This sh,__head is stubborn and will not back down.

The last time I was in the DR with my Wife and Kids near La Romana there was a Police / Military road block and I was stopped. When asked by a Soldier for I.D, darn wouldn't you know it I pulled out my California Drivers License, meanwhile other Soldiers seeing this surrounded my Rented Car. Then it dawned on me ! all they wanted was some sort of money pay-off. All 12 had rusted old Mossberg 18 inch 12 ga. pump Shotguns with pistol grips, So thinking quick I looked around for the highest ranking person present [easy he was the only one packing a simi auto pistol] I told him I was lost and where was the City of La Romana. Him being a Officer and a Gentelmen he kindly waved me forward and past the road block pointed East and said "20 kilometros Este" I handed him 5 US Dollars and off I went....GOOD THING I'M NOT A GUN PACKIN CRIMINAL, DRUG SMUGGLER OR GUN RUNNER.
