Santo Domingo.- The District Attorney has applied for coercion measures against the Migration Department’s Haitian Issues Department supervisor Luis Reyes Olmo, who is accused of charging several detained Haitians US$100 in return for their freedom.

According to assistant prosecutor Dante Castillo, the official is said to have threatened Haitian nationals Brezner Philemon, Myrlaine Lucen, Enmanuela Toussaint, Abner Orelien, Paul Herry, Lunice Silien, Belizaire Amílcar and Dieussel Deshommes at Las Américas International Airport, charging them US$100 to go through.

The eight were detained on 16 December at the airport terminal while trying to leave the country on legal passports and visas, but when they went through Immigration officials said their documentation needed to be verified.

Unfortunately he didn't learn the fundamental lesson of this country, josean, that is, if you want to go "impunity-mode on" you have to steal it BIG. Petty theft is the only thing deserving jail.

Well, this is the type of corruption prosecution that should take place at all levels of government... Keep going up to investigate officials charging $100 million for pardons ;-)

the venality of this petty bureaucrat show how deep this corruption extends in Dominican government ...this reminds me of taking the valuables from the Jews as they were trying to leave occupied Europe...this creep thought because they were Haitians he had an easy mark ...The amount of money is not relevant

If they (DR government officials) can pull off this unscrupulous and extortionist schemes at their international airport, where the world is watching, then think what more egregious and devious schemes, tortures and murders that they are pulling off against poor Haitian paysans at the border where no one is watching. For those who say $100? That is about 3,300 DR pesos; that may be 2weeks to a month's pay there, and more so for the guards at the border. I am sure the extortionist officials told those Haitian travelers Bienvenido a Republica Dominica & Bueno Año Nuevo!

i just hope that people do not get too upset and cry "conspiracy to defame" if the foreign press opines negatively on this abuse. these are the vermin who give decent dominicans a bad name. dominicans who know better should start a movement to demand better.

josean it may be hyperbole but if you had cleared immigration in as many different countries as I have and seen the fear on peoples faces that they may not be in order with their documents ,then you would understand it has nothing to do with the amount of money this venal creep tried to extort from these poor souls...but the possibility their dreams may be shattered and disrupted ...This creep needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent...this is not like paying a bribe so you wont have to pay duty on your new stereo

Luis Reyes Olmo, deserves the same scorn, probably more than the Baninter accomplice Vivian Lubrano de Castillo, who helped cook the books and was stupidly pardoned

Luis Reyes Olmo should be hung. PERIOD.

Lost Forever, he should be hanged on pay per view. people in places of authority should be held to a higher standard of expectation and performance. this is no better than a thug robber, one who sticks up banks. watch his enablers help him get 3 months in a soft jail; then, watch him return as deputy minister of sports.
