Santo Domingo.– Two presidential contenders are virtually tied in the Dominican Republic, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in Listín Diario. 37.2 per cent of respondents would vote for opposition candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), while 36.8 per cent would back incumbent Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).
Amable Aristy Castro of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) is third with 9.7 per cent, followed by Pedro Candelier of the Popular Alliance Party (PAP) with 0.7 per cent.
In the May 2004 presidential election, Fernández received 57.11 per cent of the vote, defeating incumbent Hipólito Mejía of the PRD and Eduardo Estrella of the PRSC. Fernández had previously served as the Dominican Republic’s head of state from 1996 to 2000.
On Feb. 12, Fernández rejected calls from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reform the country’s fiscal system, saying, "The conditions for this proposal are not there. (...) This is not the best moment for this undertaking." The IMF had called for a "speedy" hike in interest rates.
The next presidential election is scheduled for May 16.

Like Lio-nel's best firend, Hillary Clinton, he is going down in the polls.
Apparently in DR like the United States people are choosing CHANGE over "so-called" experience. In the US the people feel 8 years of Clintons was enough and in DR people feel 8 years of Lio-nel Fernadez is more than enough!
People every where are tired of the same old broken promises, corruption, ineffective government. The novelty of Lio-nel is wearing out. People in DR are no longer impressed with the "Dominican York's" rhetoric of we are more sophisticated and more modern than the locals.
The people are wise to the smoke and mirrors of the PLD. Remember they literally had smoke when Lio-nel formally announced his candidacy last month.
The Dominican electorate is waking up to manipulative gimmicks like the METRO and all the "eggs in on basket" (pardon the pun) development models. Like all the resources invested in the CAPITAL while the rest of the country gets peanuts.

Many did had a lot of hopes upon PLD raised to Government 96-00, 04-08 and for the most parts ended being, “Some Girls are Bigger than Others”.
This is not about building more infrastructures, its about sanitizing and preserving existent ones. Its about defining priorities, not changing the city image. Its about addressing the most basic needs for those can call themselves “Humans”. Its about establishing a judicial system in which everyone is treated equals under the country’s laws. Its about “Change”.
Note: None of the DR's Candidates represents that "Change".

Euromax" You right 100%, voting for MVP would be like going backwards, Marbella case is right n the media and PRD is so scared to loose elections.
Funny thing about is (Leonel Fernandez) is the only president that has helped "Haitians" so much and this is the weakest link between people like me and our goverment.
Other than this issue "I love PLD and LF" and our neighbors don't like him because He is doing the right thing for the country.

And why do you assume (and remember when you assume your an "ass" first) that because one criticizes this horrible president and his PLD gang one is supporting the PRD or any other political party for that matter. Either its white and if not it must be black, life is not that simplistic.
I think that by reading the very eloquent and the some not so eloquent posters here at DOMINICAN TODAY you can realize that a significant number of individuals are independent minded thinkers. Gallup polls are unusually inaccurate in predicting the correct outcome of presidential elections.
In 1948, Gallup inaccurately predicted Dewey over Truman.
The Gallup poll also inaccurately projected a slim victory by Gerald Ford in 1976.
In 2000, Gallup projected George W. Bush as the winner of the election, although Cuban American crackpots and the Bush family -- assuming a difference between the two groups -- openly and shamelessly rigged the deciding election in Florida.
Gallup provides a variety of management consulting, human resources and statistical research services. The Gallup Organization has over 40 offices in 27 countries.
World headquarters are in Washington, D.C.; operational headquarters are in Omaha, Nebraska.
The organization is reputed to be a CIA front organization.
Gallup is almost certainly a mercenary and a stinking political prostitute.
