Santo Domingo.– Forty Dominican high school students that will study in the Latin American School of Medicine (LASM) were seen off this Friday by Doctor Roberto González, Undersecretary of Higher Education.

The 20 women and the same number of men live in the country's four cardinal points and come from low income families, according to the Quisqueyan official sources.

Dominican society follows with enthusiasm and interest these youths´ return, said Gilberto Disla, Director of Student Affairs in the Higher Education Department.

They will return with human values and a warm-hearted technique that will allow them to face problems, says the Doctor Bautista Rojas, Public Health Secretary.

Collaboration in the field of education between Cuba and this country comes from 90s of the last century and has resulted up to now in the graduation of dozens of professionals.

The official emphasizes the fact that the formation of the professionals is not expenditure for the Dominican government because they are full scholarships.

The LASM is an initiative by the Cuban president Fidel Castro, in order to give the students from disadvantaged sectors, including those from the United States, the possibility to finish their studies.

Although, I am not an advocate for Cuba nor Fidel because they destroyed capitalism nevertheless if low-income students can become professionals then let's not throw the baby-out-with the wash. Sure, there are universities in the RD but the key is that these are "low-income" students from poor families who likely can not afford to pay for it in the RD (because it is not a full scholorship in the RD). If these kids have the ability then it should not be WASTED in a poor barrio because of politics!

REALITY CHECK: We are well aware of the plight of crime & drugs in poor barrios like Los Planitinots (Ensanche Caonabo) in Santiago where there is no police protection but only CORRUPTION! (i.e. DNCD & Pichardo drug gang partnership)

As far as Lion-nel, well even if his motives are not holy but the outcome will be good for future professionals that can move their families beyond proverty. You know, even a blind squirrel (RD politicians) can find a nut every now and then!

Its ashame that those kids are sent by their own government to be brain washed in order to get an education. Yes there are plenty of good universities right here in Dominican Republic, why not spend some of the money from the political campaings to educate those kids. Things like this create the false impression that cuba is a paradize in the mind of many dominicans.

I agree with JD. Although I understand the shortcomings of the Cuban government, I am well informed enough to know that the educational system in Cuba is excellent. Certainly their medical schools are some the best in the world. It is not going to hurt anyone for children to take advantage of this opportunity. What are people afraid of? Children should be given the chance to explore all differing points of view, and be able to make critical choices based on factual information. If only the leaders of the US and the DR would do the same we might be in a much better position. Keep in mind it was the narrow-mindedness of the present administration in the US that resulted in the war in Iraq and the current recession. I believe the two are very much related, and caused by people with closed minds, who were afraid to look at the big picture.

The Latin American School of Medicine (LASM) is young, but already it is one of the world's most prestigious medical schools. The best and the brightest students from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, EU, North America clamor to get into the LASM.

Contrary to the lies of the US capitalist media and the imperialist running dogs that feed exclusively on this repulsive media, the LASM is not an ideological institution, rather the school is a scientific institution that operates at the top international level in medical education.

But just because this institution is scientific does not mean that it isn't ethical or that it doesn't extol the body of ethical prinicples of Aristotle, Confucius, Plato, the Nazarene, The Buddha, and Kant.

The filthy, rotten bourgeois morality applied to medicine argues medicine is a service that only those with money or insurance deserves, not simply the sick, ... or "free market" medicine or mercantile doctors.

Everyone else is using Cuban expersitse in the caribbean and Europe. Cuba most close ally when it comes to an exchnage students program is the netherlands and to some degree france. In the western world, Mexico is closely tied to cuba to get their medicine students to refine their skills. The bahanmas and the rest of the caribbean, including PR have large numbers of their medicine students at LASM. The DR has been holding out on this not due to the politcal fallout, since there will be none, but due to the fact that the majority of students that reach the proficiency level required by LASM come from upper class class. For the upper class of DR to acknowledge, that a communist country does more for its people than their country and it brings their dirty laundry out, by putting pressure on them to better the DR education system. The last thing the upper class wants people to know is how deficient our education system is. However, something has to give and this is merely to calm, c

Latin American School of Medicine rejects this capitalist garbage about mercantile medicine and substitutes moral principles for uncontrollable and animalistic greed. Graduates promise to return to their own counties, not jump into the brain drain to the imperialist countries.

[Look at many DR middle class doctors, paying con artists, to get them into the USA.]
http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/....es-probe-bogus-offers-for-doctors

Graduates promise to accept patients on purely scientific grounds and not discriimnate against the poor.

This moral essence is the thing that increasingly draws the best and the brightest students to the Latin American School of Medicine, students who don't want to be educated into bourgeois scum, letting people suffer and die for the sake of honoring the profit motive.

The LASM was established in 1999 and is operated by the Cuban government, LASM is possibly the largest medical school in the world by enrollment with approximately 11,000 to 13,000 students from 27 or 29 countries reported enrolled in 2006. All those enrolled are international students from outside Cuba and mainly come from Latin America and the Caribbean as well as Africa, Asia, and EU.

The school also accepts students from the USA - 91 were reportedly enrolled as of January 2007. The repressive Bush regime in Washington tried to criminalize the education of the
US students, but opposition from black and Puerto Ricans conressmembers stopped the represstion.

Everything is free at the school for the students and a small stipend is provided for students.

A LASM sister school ... operated by the Venezuela government and sited in Guri, Bolívar, Venezuela ... opened in October 2006. Another sister school is under construction on the Caribbean coast in Nicaragua.

Belial, why do you have to ruin your ideas with ridiculous slogans that lost all meaning 40 years ago? Why can't you just present your opinion without the mindless references to out-dated ideologies and discredited propagana? You have some decent ideas, but who in their right mind would ever listen to you. You do yourself a disservice by cloaking your views in rhetorical foolishness.

LASM's pedagogical philosophy centers on intensive tutoring and advising.

All courses are taught in Spanish.

The pre-medical program includes courses in health sciences, chemistry, biology, math, physics as well as a 12-week intensive course in the Spanish language. The medical program begins every September and is divided into 12 semesters. Students study at the LASM campus for the first 2 years before completing their studies at one of Cuba's 21 other medical schools, including a 1 year rotating internship.

The Cuban medical training model emphasizes primary healthcare, community medicine and hands-on internship experiences.

Students are REQUIRED to pass examinations at appropriate points during their course of study.

For US students, this includes the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

I admit that your tranquility is something to behold.

These filthy US imperialists are pushing the world toward brink of extinction with global warming.

Over 6,000,000 people die needlessly from AIDS every year and the placid don't not lend a hand with a pill that cost less than $0.50 to manufacture by hi-tech methods.

The US imperial aggression and occupation of Iraq has occasioned the death of 1.2 million citizens but the serene weeps over the deaths of only 4000 imperial degenerates who have fallen while they exterminated the Iraqis in the millions.

Why does normality look upon the plight of its victims with exquisite indifference? Is it because the slimy US and foreign bourgeois media lose their cool when they report on the criminality of imperialism. If only the bourgeois media would express themselves dispassionately, we would see things differently.

Oh dear, Oh golly, Oh gee!

There's nothing new about calm sweet talk from the bourgeoisie and its hired help. They been talking like that for 500 years. Serene normality, you aren't the latest thing out there.

Gouletcolonial, those taxi drivers are not doctors nor have they ever been doctors. They are more likely patriots working for the Interior Ministry or, occasionally with extreme throw-backs like you, working for the DGI.

The talk of some of them about being physicians and theoretical physicists aims to draw out and open the mouths of visiting reactionaries, plotting to blow up hotel lobbies and passenger jets.

You may know that there are number Canadian firms that shepherd patients to Cuban hospitals set up to treat foreign patients. About half of the clients of these Canadian firms are US citizens seeking the services of Cuban doctors and the other half are Canadians.

It is at these hospitals that you will meet Cuban doctors, not in taxi cabs.

[But Cuba may lose some of its US patients soon because the passports recently issued by the US bourgeois regime are electronically "doctored" to disclose by satellite the locations of the holders of the passport.]

All US citizens, without exception, are bugged and eavesdropped on by the repressive bourgeois regime in Washington.

Dominican-Americans and Dominican US residents are more favorably situated. They can fly to the DR, drop off their US passport with family, and fly to Cuba with their Dominican passport to get medical treatment that last year about 40,0000 US citizens obtained despite the threat of imprisonment and fines for illegally seeking medical help. US Dominicans only have to worry whether the bourgeois regime in Santo Domingo will rat them out to the US imperialists.

As the vicious GOP attacks on social security and medicare increase, many retired US Domincans have informed US Cong. Charles Rangel's district office in NYC that they would like to return permanently to the DR, next door to exceptional health facilities in Santiago de Cuba, if the US imperialists can reach an understanding with the Cuban revolutionaries.

Obama.

In June 2000, a US Congressional Black Caucus delegation visited Cuba to meet with Castro. Representative Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) mentioned to Castro that his district had a shortage of doctors, who responded by offering full scholarships for US nationals from Mississippi at LASM. Later that same June, in a Washington, D.C. meeting with the Caucus, the Cuban Minister of Public Health expanded the offer to all districts represented by the Caucus. At a September 2000 speech event at Riverside Church, New York City, Castro publicly announced a further expanded offer which was reported as allowing several hundred places at LASM for medical students from low-income communities from any part of the USA. Reports of the size of this offer varied in the US bourgeois press - 250 or 500 places were suggested. The LASM offer to US students was classified as a "cultural exchange" program by the US State Department in order to avoid the restrictions of the U.S. embargo against Cuba.

In 2004, the legality of the presence of US students at LASM was threatened by tightened restrictions against travel to Cuba by US nationals under the administration of "president" George W. Bush. A Caucus campaign led by Representatives Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Charles Rangel (D-NY) with 27 other members of Congress persuaded Secretary of State Colin Powell to exempt LASM from the tightened restrictions.

Applications from US citizens are administered through the New York City-based Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), headed by the noted human rights activist and critic of the U.S. embargo of Cuba, the Rev. Lucius Walker Jr.

Admission standards are extremely high.

This year, when the new term begins in September, there will be more US medical students in Cuba than Dominicans.

Of course, some of the US students at LASM are "low-income" US spies.

But even these low-income spies are moved somewhat by the noble policy of the Cuban Revolution to offer either free AIDS treatment or reasonable income-based treatment to anyone afflicted with the pestilence who makes it to Cuban soil.

For sure, many US citizens who are victims of this pestilence make it to Cuban soil.

The degenerates who, among others of different views, participate in the administration of the medical profession in the USA often charge as much as $15,000 for the same treatment.

Again, many medical schools, even in the USA, have somewhere like 300 to 500 students [often less outside of the USA] because they don't want the supply of medical services to exceed the effective demand for medical services, causing a drop in the amount of the fees that middle class doctors can charge their patients

The LASM has an unimaginable 12,000 foreign [non-Cuban] students enrolled..

"Cuba Flies out Yellow Fever Vaccine to Paraguay

Asuncion, Feb 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuba will send doses of yellow fever vaccine to Paraguay following an outbreak that has already killed two persons in the South American country, Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte announced.

"The Cuban friends will arrive with their plane for Operation Miracle and they will also bring the vaccines", Duarte said.

The Paraguayan government declared a 90-day national emergency to detour bureaucratic processes and obtain funds and donations of vaccines from neighboring countries.

Yellow fever had not been registered in that nation for 34 years. "

Please do your research, because you make yourself look less educated thant what you really are.
