SANTO DOMINGO. - The ruling PLD party on Monday presented documents of the business transactions made by the oppositon PRD party presidential candidate Miguel Vargas, with which they seek to show that he had lied when he said in a television program that he didn’t conduct any commercial operations with the Dominican State when he was Public Works minister in Hipólito Mejía’s Administration (2000-2004).

Speaking for the PLD Campaign Committee, Economy minister Temístocles Montás showed documents which he said prove that Vargas conducted several purchases and sales with the State, operations which would’ve been done through related companies, mentioning real estate investments Harna, business group VARMA, MARAVEDÍ, and Palmeras Comercial among them.

"We have insisted that Miguel Vargas Maldonado, who has for a long time tried to sell the image of a successful businessman, is only successful in deals when his party is in power, because nobody has known Miguel Vargas Maldonado’s business operations when the PRD hasn’t been in office," Montás said in a press conference next to other senior PLD leaders.

He reiterated his party’s accusation against Vargas that when he was Public Works Minister, turned a 1 million peso land purchase  into 900 million, through his dealings with the State. "The bad practice to negotiate with his own government, while he was Public Works Minister, is profuse in Miguel Vargas, because he must explain to the country another of his cloudy operations which affects the public interest."

Among the deals which Montás said the PRD candidate made in the Mejía government while he was Public Works Minister figure the purchases in Samaná  243,816.5 square meters in parcel 3936 (two transactions), for RD$875,000 pesos; 62,795.95 square meters  in parcel 4075, for 125,000 pesos and 166,976 square meters in parcel 4076, for which he paid 275,000 pesos.

All these lands were bought from the State between 1999-2001, "although on August 21  2000, by means of a disposition by then president Hipólito Mejía, reminded the officials, their relatives and related companies that they were prohibited from doing deals with the State."

Other transactions which Vargas made, according to the PLD, were a deferred payment  using lands in Jacobo Majluta avenue in Santo Domingo.

My friend this is a case of the "Pot calling the kettle black." You ass-ume that a critique of Lio-nel Fernandez means one is in support of Miguel or Amable or Eduardo for that matter. As I have written before on may occasions that is a very simplistic view of politics.

If these facts are true then why didn't Leo-nel agree to debate Miguel and hit him with this "knockout " blow on television with the whole world watching? What is the "Pot" afraid of?

He may be a bum but so is the sitting president.

When Hippo was in Power sure the peso lost value but the prices stayed lower than they are now. 50 to 1 peso still had 151 peso sixpack of Presidente.

Peso gained with the manipulation of Leonel but the prices triples in many cases and double in most. How the hell was that good for the country:?

It's a shame that we as Dominicans will never get out of the same politics.. Tiren los trapitos al suelo.. thats the only they can do.
I'm surprised Leonel is not mentioning how he was able to make 120K dollars into 600 Million Dollars in 12 years.
