SANTO DOMINGO.- "I reiterate that I haven’t bought nor sold one meter pf land to the Dominican State in the governments of the Dominican Revolutionary Party and that denunciation of the PLD is more of the same, result of the desperation before the reelections candidate, president Leonel Fernandez’s adverse situation with the electorate," was the opposition presidential candidate Miguel Vargas’ reaction this morning to the ruling party’s allegation.
He said Fernandez and the PLD have to invent things, such as the allegation’s reiteration yesterday, "because they can’t find how to detain his electoral push and to try to restrain the government’s deterioration and the re-election’s image, fruit of the governmental inefficiency and broken promises."
Senior PLD leader Temístocles Montás, in press conference yesterday, said Vargas made deals with the State when he was Public Works minister in the previous administration.
Vargas said Fernandez uses the PLD to “say those lies which nobody believes. President Fernandez doesn’t talk about accomplishments, but instead makes new promises which in four years didn’t keep."

I still don't get it. Pesos lost value, YES, now the price of beer after the peso regained ground is 3x as much so the question is WHY?
Dollar 50 to 1 peso Six Pack of Presidente 151 Pesos
Dollar 33 to 1 peso Six pack of presidente 282 Pesos.
We are talking DOMESTIC beer here folks.
Tell me what Leonel did good for your life here in the whole term in office? Inflation is out of control (NO MATTER WHAT the Central Bank Says)
Look at the price of a Plantano for heavens sake.
Of course they are all crooks but I lived better with the other crook before Leonel and I didn't have to suffer the stupid METRO.

Escott, you are totally on spot there. When the dollar was at 50 pesos, there was more buying power. the dollar now is at a 34.xx which is cleary not giving any benefits to the final consumer since we actually can buy much less than when the dollar was at 50.

You make a valid point. However, the higher costs that we all face are due mostly to the high taxes that we are being forced to pay. These taxes are a direct result of the total wreckage of our economy due to the devasting policies of the PRD which left this country almost bankrupt. Were it not for the IMF, this country would be in total chaos, and in return for the money, the IMFinsisted that the current government balance the budget, mostly through much higher taxes. Remember that the Mejia government was so bad that the IMF eventually refused to do anything to help since the PRD never lived up to any agreement with anyone (IMF, World Bank, etc). Had the PRD done anything to help save our sinking ship, these taxes would have been in place before. And had they not mismanaged EVERYTHING they touched, these taxes never would have been needed.

Hey Escott,..so do you think that in four year things were going to changed just like that. you have look around the worl of what is happening the world economy now. oh let just mention one USA which the one were 80% of all dominican living abroad are. not a good one right now, correct me if I am wrong for saying these things. MVP was one Hopolito supporter when he went for the re-election and now he is againsted it kind of make me sick. hypocrite just because it didn't work for them it doesn't mean that it will not work for Fernandez. let kindly ask you this when the hipolito was in power did you travel outside the country because if you did, you must heard what everybody was saying about how doorknot and stupid we were I used to be ashame to say the i was dominican thanks to that idiot of hipolito and friends.

so the question is WHY?

For the Dominicans families overseas to send double the amount of US$ dollars to the locals. Every single product/service at DR its calculated at 50/1an the official rate is 33/1.
If you compare prices with other countries exchange rate, at DR everything is more expensive. So figure out, how people do a living with RD$4,000.00, and there's a person here suggesting that individuals making RD$10,000.00 should be able to save RD$3,000.00 every month and become rich like them, beside sleeping over cement bags. LOL
Thats WHY !!!

they just worry about stupid crap!
complain about the DR
I have witnessed the nice progress and hope it continues in the DR
Get off the booze get a job and take the metro to work!
Trust me jobs are available, start a business, use your little brains and think!

It's all economics, people. When I came to the DR in 2000 the peso was at 15;1 us. A year later it was at 25:1. In 2003 it had climbed to almost 50:1. Since all my income was in US$, I thought it was great.
Then the cheeze started to get binding. Prices started to rise because the old imported inventory of businesses had to be replaced at the new exchamge rates. This continued even after Leonel was elected and the exchange rate dropped dramatically. Then the new taxes were imposed by Leonel's Administration to pay off some of the debt (that was their excuse adnit made sense to do that). The problem has been, since those days, that those taxes have been misapplied by the Administration (the METRO again) while the prices of goods have continued their upward spiral due to those taxes.
Now, for the past year we have had a rather stable exchange rate of around 33:1 and imported inventory is begining to catch up, though we haven't seen an aappreciable drop in prices.
From: Dominican Republic
Even though the new taxes on a carton of cigarettes have been dropped, the price of a carton hasn't. That is because the vendors are making more anddon't want to give up the extra they are making. The same scenario applies to a bottle of Presidente. I blame the vendors for that, not the Administration.
Then we have all the new subsidies demanded by the unions, the wage increases by the doctors and the unions and the inept operation of government facillities like the Refinery and others which are just as bad. On top of all this we have had a few years of "natural disasters" and the incumbent inept recovery efforts.
The biggest problem through it all has been that neither this, nor the previous Administrations have had the political will to correct themistakes of the past 60 years of government corruption and clientism.
Don't complain of that which you have been a part of and have not had the guts to put a stop to.
Whine you will, but accept you must.

poor Hipolito has been blame for discovering the problem.
Now what the PRD did was horrible. selling companies owned by Banniter at a 70% off to a group of people.. thats corrupt. but Leonel sold the electrical company lets say for a $1 million and bought it again for $12 million I wonder if he is a consultant for the electrical company.. do you see the problem.
by the way, I have been dealing with companies in the DR, and I tried to open a company.. just with the headache that I was getting. I realized my health is more important than $$$.... I prefer to invest in companies already stablished but can you trust the Auditors presenting the financial statements??

To Juliony: compare the electric issue now with Leonel and before with Hipolito.
When the damn PRD was in charge "Blackouts" were destroying our economy and the
country looked like a jungle.
The issue has improve at least 80 Percent or more regarding the past, also 50X1 pesos for dollars, drugs, no trust from any foreign country on DR, at the end We encounter probles with
the oil and Venezuela too.
Hipolito Mejia sponsor the guy from Haiti "Guy philippe" too, Guido Gomez Masara another scary issue and military personnel being corrupted by the same dumb goverment.
And the best of the best I don't know If you know but I know that during the last elections the whole country was tense and worried because these bunch of animals and beasts (PRD) didn't want to acknowledge that They lost the elections.
