Well, how was theride?
Was it bumpy, smooth, fast, slow, uneventful, or what?
Did Leonel make the "best" of the ride?
What did the other participants think about it?
The salient points were omitted in the reports.

Evidently, it didn't move, since the reporter is so nominal.

And, why are three guys ... in the picture above ... still wearing hard-hats after completion of construction?

i just don't get why the stations don't get a name that indentifies the location, maybe i am too simple.

but iu do not see logic to go to Abraham Lincoln i need to stop at Francisco Alberto Caamaño, because that is Abraham Lincoln

Well, isn't the Metro worried ... in addition to the workers ... about the health and safety of the president of the republic and the young gentleman ... in the beige shirt with the camera dangling from his neck, and standing-out with the mod "do" which the same gentleman wore in another picture last week ... as he stood next to the president?

I see no hard-hat on the president's head or on that of the gentleman's.

Do the workers know something the president doesn't?

Or, perhaps, is this the same picture that appeared last week? If so, what is the DT insinuating?

That the president, absent a hat, doesn't have occupational health and safety?

Belial, you are just looking for something to "bitch" about.
Why don't you stick to the subject instead of acting like some kindergarten kid who doesn't like anything.
You should realize by now that your credibility is at ZERO and that you should leave the scene.
No doubt you think you are "cute" by constantly belittling everything in sight.
Got news for you, kid, you are loosing more than you are gaining.
You must be counting your "gotchas" on an abacus and forgot how to subtract.

Belial, that is an old picture. I follow the metro stories and info quite closely and that was his first visit to the metro. I also watched his entire speech and ride on the metro. It was a great experience. It'll probably get on youtube in a few hours by ppl. Also, ppl will be able to ride it for free till 8pm (dominican time) today.

Even if it were today and they were wearing those hats (though like I said b4, the picture was taken during his first visit), the ppl w/ hard hats are the ones that go on the tracks and are working all day. The president was not and has not been taken a walk on the tracks or the tunnels to be needing a hard hat.

The saddest part is that deep down you were probably hoping it would fail just so that you can say your "I told you so's" and have more material to work w/ against the project and the government.

Mass transportation moves of this magnitude are huge accomplishments for any regime in terms of their impact on the environment and on the load of ever-increasing oil consumption and on public convenience, compared to the wasteful automobile mode of getting around town even if ethanol is the primary fuel for the wasteful mode.

It's hope that the current line will be extended ... by this or other administrations ... to other areas of the city to maximize the already significant benefits promised by the program.

This should do the re-election.

LEt's all get on the metro. It shows that we can do it! It's a great accomplishment. Only the second metro in the caribbean with a system that comparable to the great ones built in europe. It's a great achievement and I commend the government for undertaking this complex project. However, the gov't needs to focus on social programs to strengthen healthcare, education, energy, and definitely re-distribute the wealth obtained from the wonderful progress recently sustained in the country. A great feat has been done with the metro that all DOminicans should be proud of. Now, it's time for LF and his administration to try and tackle the issues that plagues the country's most vulnernable. E' pa'lante me gente. I wish you all the best on our Indpendence Day. No matter what political lines we favor, we are all brothers and sisters and should continue to support one another. Peace and love!

the most advanced metro in all of America, in record time and cost and I didn't see it as top news on telemundo channel 41. Now I know that channel is propoganda. I will never watch it again. They only showed it for like 10 seconds. I'm outraged. My dominican mom would not have even known about it if I didn't tell her.

Univision's coverage was absolutely horrible. The ONLY ppl they interviewed was Miguel Vargas and Officials from the PRSC. They obviously seeked out specific ppl and stayed away from the majority of the ppl there like PLD officials. Then the only thing they mentioned about the metro was the fact that it passes by poor neighborhoods. It didn't mention how instead of 2 hrs in a hot, falling-apart car ppl take to get to work/school in that route, they will now get there in less than half an hour. It didn't mention how it's one of the most modern in the world. They mentioned the price as if it were astronomical but did not mention it is one of (if not THE) cheapest metro ever built in the world. It didn't show clips on the hundreds of ppl yelling and showing support for the historic day, they didn't bother to interview any of them. If it weren't for the fact that I knew about the metro, w/ that news report, I would think that everyone opposed the metro except Leonel.

I think the government should thank the haitian workers that worked day in day out even on holidays to make this metro possible. On another note, ok, the metro is here although I'm not a big fan of it due to other priorities but this will go down in dominican history as the best achievement. Fernandez have given the people want they want now those that think rational how will the costly maintenance of the metro keep it up to par? Will the governement subsidise it to keep the cost at the same price for the average dominican. Will the Yipeta middles class & up keep them in the garage to take the metro? And what is going to happen to the conchistas that served these routes? Will the government offer them alternative jobs? Well, congrats to Fernandez for accomplishing your dream lets hope that it follows thru and serve the people.

Jabao.
1-Workers (dominican or hatian) are thanked by getting paid. I don't see a need for a ceremony on this. Maybe a little celebration when they complete it but it's not like they were volunteers working there. 2-many ppl w/ private cars drive them bc it's their best alternative. They know that if they use the current public transportation they will get to work even later than their private cars, more uncomfortable, wrinkled clothes, and sweaty bc of no AC and so many ppl on top of you. When u offer a person the ability to sleep more, not worry about parking, save money (gas), comfortable, muuuuch quicker and more efficient means of transportation, MANY will choose the metro. There will always be some who simply prefer cars or think they are too good for a metro but chances are they can afford to do so (but this is the minority)...but even then, they may just want to give it a try and realize that it just makes more sense.

contd: 3-The first line of the metro alone will provide 400 to 500 direct jobs and they will first consider those who will eventually lose their jobs bc of the metro (in other words, motoconchistas, and any other public driver of the route that covers the metro will have first pick).

And yes, this will be seen in the future as a very smart move by the ppl. The most important thing that I believe this will do is make the ordinary dominicans be less conforming to the horrible public transportation among other services in the country and realize that they can ask more, they can desire more, and they deserve more regardless of their economic status. If the gov. can build a metro, they can upgrade their quality of life in other areas. Also, the biggest expense for dominicans after food and beverages, is transportation (25%); even more than their housing, health, and education. The same ticket you use for the metro will provide transfers for buses that compliment the metro route

contd: as well as the future metro lines; this will save the users even more money. Not to mention the fact that students (I believe with good grades...as an incentive) and senior citizens will ride for free. I believe and hope this will help change the culture in even indirect ways.

EL_Mayimbe,Thank you for answering my questions. The people that I know , they aren't going to keep that real expensive Yipeta parked it is a status symbol. DR is a classist society where "mire lo que yo tengo" has more value than saving money and associating with la gente popular. Just the thought of crowded area people brushing up on me gives me the chills..LOL. As you mention the people that had no choice to take these crowded public cars will finally have the means to get to there destination on time. And the free ride for students with good grades & senior citizens is a great idea. I have to say that I was happy to see the train going with Fernandez riding on his dream work on dominican independence day as he promised. I think we all have to give this guy credit and respect. So far so good. I think some of the opposition wanted it to stop "se fue la luz" but he fulfilled his dream and showed them. He is definitely getting elected. I'll get on once.

Joop2,
you are right about keeping it simple. It makes more sense and it is more practical to name the stations based on where they are. I don't have nothing against the people that the stations are named after, they deserve to have their name mentioned but it doesn't make sense that way.

I agree with the whole name thing. I think it's unnecessary but we'll see how it plays out I guess. They should change the street names to the station names. Which reminds me how much I can't stand how the most important streets in the capital are named after american presidents. Not that they aren't worthy figures in history but I don't see what they have done for the DR to have such important streets named after them. But that's another issue.
