President Fernandez speaks in Congress yesterday.
SANTO DOMINGO.- The opposition parties yesterday rebuked president Leonel Fernandez’s claim that Dominicans are now eating more and better than four years ago and questioned other aspects of his speech, describing it as dividing the country into “a half-island of fantasy and another real one, filled with poor and indigents.”
PRD party candidate Miguel Vargas Maldonado said Fernandez’ speech to the National Assembly showed that despite his re-election bid the President has never kept his promises. "He again postponed the solution of the electrical problem, which in 1996 promised to solve it in that period; in 2004 he made the same promise and now he postpones it for 2012."
Interviewed yesterday in Santiago, Vargas said even though Fernandez kept his promise of building the Santo Domingo Metro, it was a personal whim which he said cost RD$40 billion. “That’s one of the great issues we are weighing and in this region (Cibao) we are asked if they must also pay the subsidy for the Santo Domingo Metro."
The former Public Works minister criticized the Head of State’s rhetoric, because in his view these last three years “have been negative” for tourism, free zones and national production, compared with the previous government.
The PRSC party general secretary Víctor Gomez Casanova also rejected Fernandez’s comparing his term with that of former president Hipólito Mejía, instead of rendering accounts on his own performance from February 27, 2007, to yesterday, as the Constitution stipulates. "As far as the Metro, he didn’t render accounts to the country on how much it cost, nor what it will cost to maintain it.”
Ramon Rogelio Genao, spokesman of the PRSC deputies, said the speech divided the country in two: an imaginary "half-island of fantasy and another real one, filled with poor and indigents devoid of everything."

Its true Leonel could have spent the money on something else than building the subway.. but if we look at it this way we have now better cheaper transportation and becoming more like a middle class country that we are suppose to look like. Adding to that Leonel said after 2008 if voted for again which I hope will happen, he will become more dedicated to the Energy problem we dominicans suffer from and said he will fix that problem to where Dominican Republic will never have lights out again. Hopefully this will be solved and fixed. Dominican Republic won't be the same after 2008 with all Leonel has accomplished.

Considering the disastrous conditions that LF inherited due to the failed policies of the PLD, I, for one think that he has done a pretty good job. When a new President's first priorities are calamity control, his options are somewhat limited. There are lots of decisions that LF has made that I disagree with, but there is nothing about the PLD that is correct. EVER!!!

It is a fact that the dominican public transportation has been a mess for as long as i have memory.
It is also a fact that for the last, at least, 20 years, diferent administrations from all the main political parties have provided millions and millions of pesos to the transportation unions without any visible improvement in the public transportation mess.
For God sake, let's put aside our political flags and together embrace the Dominican Bandera. This is a time to celebrate. It just happened that Leonel Fernandez was the one with this visionary initiative.
DON'T penalize the President just because he is more intelligent than the other gentlemen who directed the nation before him and because he has showed much more love for his country than those who intend to replace him in the near future.
Let's stop sabotaging every initiative that do not comply with our selfish political aspiration.

MVP should not make any reference to the previous PRD adminsitration. He should be running away from it!!! Jesus, it's so frustrating to talk to some of these PRDistas.
