The Police used a water cannon like the one pictured.

SANTO DOMINGO.- Riot-control agents of the National Police fired tear gas and a water cannon against marchers who came to a sudden halt in a Mexico avenue intersection, just two blocks away from the National Palace.

The demonstrators, who supported the doctors and persisted in trying to reach the National Palace, decided to remain one corner closer in the Mexico avenue where they remained in the middle of the streets stopping traffic.

Many families in the zone left their homes fleeing from the tear gas and gunfire.

Glad the police are on top of the situation, they aren't about to let this bunch of doctor thugs terrorize the seat of government, the other criminals can go about their buisness as usual.

??? come again!!!
sorry to burst your bubble but these doctors have 2 jobs public and private practice.
They save lives ok, i give you that, but show up at their place of practice with no money and see how these live savers turn you down unless you provide the cash and/or insurance.
I will quote a dominican doctor practicing downthere. " i became a doctor to become rich not to help the needy...
needless to say i had no comment after that.

Is this a true democracy?

Do not even professional Dominicans have freedom of speech? What is the President and the RD Gov trying to tell citizens?

I know doctors working for public health in the RD personally and they do not make more than a US person at Wal-Mart making a $1000 per month. Most doctors just want to survive unless they cater to the super rich. If you want to get rich as a doctor then you do not practice in the RD but become a surgeon in Beverly Hills. In the RD everyone is a 2nd class citizens who is not an RD Gov official which includes Haitians, poor Dominicans and all others.

This situation is just sad. I bet the minimum wage in the US is more than the average wage of a doctor in DR!

Sir! There has been a bank fraud - Oh well, not to worry.
Sir! Half the city has no electricity - Come back tomorrow.
Sir! Justice didn't make those bad guys suffer - Lets forget about that.
Sir! They are dropping drugs from planes again - I'm busy playing with my train set today.
Sir! Those life saving Doctors are approaching the palace - Right get out the guns and tear gas!

Wherever you go in the world, those in power shit on those who aren't.
Most of the problem originates from simple human greed and the need to have more than the next man. Its sad, but you see it a lot in the DR. As we say in the UK - "Its new money" new money is the worst kind. Those who had nothing to suddenly having it all, very rarely know how to handle it. Look at Hip-Hop - originally their message was we are black, we want the rights you have - we are fighting for our culture and our brothers. Give them a bit of cash - do they help their brothers? No they spend it on whores, hummers, condos and guns.

LOl I agree with all that you said, but the last part i would not consider it HIP HOP, more like HIP CRACK or RAP CRAP. There are still some Real HIP HOP artists out there.

Not all Hip Hop is about cars and hos. Many great rappers are conscious rappers. Like Common and Immortal Technique.

Thats quite true, and I'd have mentioned those, but 1000 characters isn't enough sometimes.
Common is a good artist.

Is this a true democracy? TO ANSWER YOU. NO!!!
BUT I Must respond to your comment. Lets not forget how much does it take to make a million pesos down there. 29,411.76 (in today's exchange) dollars
The standard of living is cheaper than in the USA and Europe. Please lets not forget that everyone survives but because we feel sorry for their sad stories they will cry if they know you and I will be the suckers sending them money.
I know for a fact most doctors dont even work after 12 noon on fridays.
Yes, my friend the doctor wants the same wages as here too!
but lets not forget a doctor here has to pay back up to at times 300k on student loans.
you graduate from la uad and you start with $0. debt.

You can't compare not expect the same economical income or conditions as other countries becuase they are not following the same economical growth, demand, and or any other conditions.
its just ludicrous to expect same wages btwn a usa doctor and a dominican doctor!
PERIOD!

The standard of living is cheaper than in the USA and Europe??? HUH !!!

Regular Gasoline is RD166 = $4.88 in dollars How Much is it in the US now?

Rice, Cooking oil, Fruits is more expensive than the US, believe me i have compared prices so that i can survive down here. I actually have a 4ft box of food sent down to me, and they only charge $90

Ramon noodles 2 for 30 pesos and in the US 6 for a dollar.

I could go on and on, but yeah the cost of living is not cheaper then the US, its complete the opposite, and that TLC did not help either.

HELLO WAKE UP NYCDR you better take a trip to D.R. and do alittle grocery shopping while your there.you say the standard of living is cheaper .well i've got news for you.I found out myself how expensive it is to live in D.R. Most of everthing in the grocery stores cost more then in the U.S.A..LET ALONE THE PRICE OF FUEL. Some times i wonder how the dominician people can afford to live there. While your there try going out to a nice place to eat and drink and see what your bill is. So don't tell the rest of the world that it's cheaper in D.R.Futher more why do you think that over 75 percent of the doctors leave the D.R. for better wages in U.S.A. AND OTHER COUNTRIES.I would like like you to answer this question if possible.SO the goverment should give them a pay raise before they all leave for a better future.Put yourself in there shoes.

Yeah...its really cheap to live here! LOL

If i want rice and beans every night I will do fine...that goes for beer and rum as well...I will survive. But I agree, the people who deserve little are reaping the bennefits of this growing economy and and those who have taken the time to educate themselves...pay the price. I know its nice to have a $50,000 Jeepta and do nothing with your life other than drive it around...all the while tossing styrofoam containers out the window and shooting traffic signs to show your sophistication...but hey...a doctor may one time save your drunken well connected arse. Think about it...one day the big will have to depend on a doctor. It is inevitible. But hey...pay them like a colmado worker and thats just not going to save your life!

All this negativity!

The Fuehrer says life is great in METROLANDIA so much democracy and freedom of expression. Unless of course you try to exercise it. Like doctors trying to peacefully march seeking a redress of their grievances or Nuria exposing institutional criminal corruption.

You would think that the "all Lio-nel does is good and for the sake of modernity crowd," would be appaulding the doctors and Nuria for practicing modern democracy.

But I guess we pick and choose what we want to modernize as long as it does not affect the absolute authority of El Jefe!
