SANTO DOMINGO.- A National District Court of Appeals yesterday sentenced newspaper Listín Diario to pay one million pesos in damages to former central banker Jose Lois Malkun, for violating Law 6132 of Freedom of Expression.

The Court of Appeal’s First Penal Chamber also condemned the daily’s former director, Miguel Franjul, to pay a 250 peso fine and the reporter Ramon Benzán, 25 pesos.

National District prosecutor Jose Manuel Hernandez was acquitted in the case by the judges Manuel Hernandez, Katia M. Jiménez and Francisco Ortega, who voted agaisnt penalizing the country’s oldest newspaper and the journalists.

let us hope this does not inhibit...... FREEDOM OF THE PRESS......we hope for the sake of this blog DT has more on this important story....Sometimes we all forget how fortunate we are not to have to live under the restrictions of say ....CUBA.....or worse

Not surprising. The justice system here is completely unpredictable. But, if forced to make a prediction, I also go with the most pessimistic. I am rarely let down.
