Contains corrections submitted by Judge Calvo-Torres

Santo Domingo.- Another young Dominican professional in the United States has made the country of her ancestors proud. Betty Calvo-Torres after being first appointed to the seat by Mayor Byron Brown, was elected Criminal Court Judge in Buffalo, a position she’ll hold for 10 years, won on the basis of hard work in the U.S. judiciary.

She becomes the only female Hispanic Judge in Upstate New York.

Born in Puerto Rico, daughter of the Dominican of the Silvia Mercedes and Julio Calvo, her first post was that of Assistant District Attorney, where her work took her to win the primaries in September and then in the November general election, when she won the Buffalo judge’s bench for the entire 8th Judicial District.

After working as an Assistant District Attorney for five years, she established her own successful private practice, from which she began her quest for a judicial post.

Lio-nel "the Boy Scout" Fernandez; soon to be recommended for sainthood by the PLD cardinal, as soon as the No Show Jobs scandal dies down, has had almost four years in power and since 2006 the majority in both houses, I wonder why he hasn't arrested the criminal Mejia?

Inquiring minds want to know? Could it be that Mr. Mejia is an honest upstanding person or rather that those who live in glass houses should not cast stones.

Come on Lio, come on PLD, show some male genitalia arrest Hipolito, you will win in a landslide.

Edward the ball is in your God's court , you think he will play it!

it would be nice if we could get some integrity in our local Dominican judiciary.....New Yorkers would hope that she does not follow in the footsteps of our local Judges whose fame for corruption is unsurpassed....Good luck to her....and we are sorry for the embarrassment she must feel about her Dominican contemporaries in the Judicial field....

Goulecolonial: ur example is most interesting...if u hold both USA and Canda passports ur breaking the law (US law) heres some news tou all (especially to those "Dominican Politicians"who hold USA passports) ur breaking the law. In response to "Rubirosa" it is great news for the Dominican community insofar as it is finally assimilating into the american way of life. just like the rest of the immigrants b4 them (german,Irish, etc).

US Dual Citizenship: The U.S. government allows dual citizenship. United States law recognizes U.S. Dual Citizenship, but the U.S. government does not encourage it is as a matter of policy due to the problems that may arise from it. It is important to understand that a foreign citizen does NOT lose his or her citizenship when becoming a U.S. citizen. An individual that becomes a U.S. citizen through naturalization may keep his or her original citizenship. However, as some countries do not recognize dual citizenship, it is important to consider it carefully before applying for U.S. citizenship.

Gouletcolonial: The law is absolute....the USA does not encourage dual nationality. I also doubt your statement that you ask a USA immigration which nationalities passport would he care to see. I can just see u being escorted to that secondary interview at immigration. Having witness friends and family members with dual passports exit and enter different ports of entry NONE have ever asked the inspector which passport would they like to examine...very much on the contrary.....lets ask the American judge on whom this article is written....i bet she only has one passport....guess which one? Goodnight sir.

There is nothing in US law forbidding a US citizen to possess both a US passport and a foreign passport -- provided, of course, that the person really is a citizen of both countries.

Folks it's all genetics .. Let me explain,
A-Rod and Betty Calvo Torres were both born of 100% Dominican parents.
This means the only thing Gringo they have is a birth certificate and passport. Every cell in their body is composed of Dominican matter . Not to mention all the Dominican tradition, values, and blood flowing through their veins.. that makes them Dominican in my opinion..

Let us keep things in perspective. Most of your comments sounds so 19th and 20th century backward thinking. Let look at the present and into the future and face the new reality 21st century reality. America is no longer a melting pot but instead a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual ligual society. This melting pot concept is passé. We are and can be what ever we want, thanks to the benefits and advancements in communication and transportation. My 17 year old nephew was born and raised in New Hampshire, USA does not speak Spanish has never been to the DR (not yet) is the son of a Dominican-American father born in New York city and a white anglo saxon (WASP) mother of Swedish/English decent. He is proud of his Dominican ancestry and culture he loves baseball, merengue and mangú but most interestingly, his car vanity license plates read:
"I'm Dominican".

Her main blood lineage is "Dominican" but I guess our neighbors obsession to look for something "Under" to every news related to any well known "Dominican" in The US is
that They don't have anybody "Achieving goals" and reflecting what is to be a "Dominican"

I do not know how you guys go for prasing her to fighting over?? All of your questions can be anwserd at the following site http://www.richw.org/dualcit/policies.html . With regard to a child born outside the US to two American parents who are married to one another, this State Department document fails to mention the requirement that at least one parent must have "had a residence" in the US prior to the child's birth. This requirement is still a part of the law. I do not know the laws of any other country?

Please check this site out and get back with what you find??
