EDGE says the Parque Duarte is a spot for gays to gather.

Santo Domingo.- The Parque Duarte in the city of Santo Domingo is becoming the preferred place for homosexuals, lesbians, transgender people and male prostitutes from across the country, said newspaper EDGE in a report today.

It notes that Santo Domingo is Dominican Republic’s least homophobic city, which prompts a large number of homosexuals to gather in the Colonial Zone to meet with friends, drink and even “cruise.”

Quoted by the Boston-based EDGE David Báez and his boyfriend said Dominican society is accepting this movement and homosexuals and lesbians feel freer. "People may see you, but they won't judge you. You can do what you want."

They said there are many older Dominican gays still hidden in “the closet” because of homophobia or conservative attitudes towards homosexuality from their own families, though noting that these attitudes continue to change.

but i do not also make out with my partner in public out of respect for me and him

Whao, congrats!!! .
Heterosexuals should not (make out) or do other personal things in public either out of respect to themselves and others. Its of very poor taste.
:(
Everything has a place and time. I am very happy for you...It shows your values : )

Nice to know that the DR is becoming more tolerant and socially liberal.

what about our kids what would they think of all that. have any of you though about that. I have a son whom is 15 now and it worries me because at the age boys and girls are be fragile. And do not know what they want in life and if they see guys kissing guys and girls kissing girls that could have a big impact on them in the future.

Bernies,

I agree that people should keep their affection to private situations, but if you really think that seeing 2 gays kissing could in any way , shape, or form make someone gay - you're living in the 1950's.

Bernies give your son a little more credit. Besides if he happens to be Gay, it happened long before he would saw some guy kiss another guy. One is born gay, one does not turn gay. I think that teenagers and young people in general are much more open, tolerant and accepting than some people give them credit for. As far as DR and gay rights is concerned, I think that Dominican society has made some strides forward. There's a Gay Pride Rally/Parade that occurs every year at the end of June, which many known Dominican celebraties and public figures attend and show their support. Even though there is still a lot more ground to cover regarding Gay Rights, the DR is heading in the right direction. We come along way baby!!!

dont worry, Bernies. if your kids witness a purse snatching, that wont make them consider a life of crime. people have their own value systems, and do not necessarily copy everything. besides, as snoopyy observes, one does not simply " turn gay".
