SANTO DOMINGO.- The waters of Boca Chica beach (east), between the ports Caucedo and Andrés, are tainted by around 800 gallons of bunker c fuel-oil, allegedly spilled by a cargo ship of the company Seaboard Caribbean.

The Dominican Navy and Environmental Police agents retained the ship after the accident, said Environment minister Omar Ramirez, after meeting with the boat’s captain, who signed affidavits to acknowledge the damages.

The ship’s captain, whose name wasn’t revealed, said the fuel accidentally spilled during dockage during the offloading of some containers at 9 a.m. yesterday, Ramirez said.

The official said for their safety swimmers are banned from the popular beach, as technicians battle the oil slick which has been dragged along the entire coastline.

The boat will have to remain in port until the case is taken to court today.

without humans this would be a very beautiful place .....Boca Chica one hundred or even fifty years ago would have been beautiful.....but now it is said "when God gives the Caribbean an enema Boca Chica is where he will put the hose"....and that is without the oil spill....this is the absolute opposite of ECO TOURISM...What a shame

it is a shame that more beaches are not maintained in this general area to lift some of the urban pressure from this formerly beautiful place

The hotels killed the beach originally. By dredging. At one time you could walk out from the beach to two islands. The hotels should be forced to put the beach back to its original state and get the bill for the work at the end. They selfishly wanted more sand near their hotels to make room for private beaches. Which are against Dominican law anyway.
