Santo Domingo.– Residents across the Dominican Republic might see a significant reduction in water supply if dry weather in the region persists, the government warned Saturday.

Pipes that pump 400 million gallons of water daily to an estimated 3 million people in Santo Domingo already are being closed for a couple of hours every day, said Mariano German, director of the state utilities company.

Water supplied by one of the country's main rivers has dropped to 35 million gallons a day from 95 million gallons, German said.

Remember and adequate water supply is not a priority for the overcrowded "Capital," but the METRIO is. Thus attracting more people to the city and thereby continue to overburdened the already inadequate basic services infrastructure.

Only a well thought out rational policy of environmentally sustainable decentralised development, throughout the entire island, can begin to address this insane model of putting all the development eggs in one basket i.e. La Capital.

La Capital is part of the republic it is not the republic. This obsessive concentration of irrational development makes that city more unlivable by the second in an arithmetic manner and soon, if not already, by geometric proportions.

This news clip is evidence of how this current narrow minded "urban planning process," if their is any master plan at all, is beginning to collapse!

Anybody who listens to US imperialists on water, confirmed monsters and compulsive enemies of humanity, deserves to die of thirst.

As you die of thirst, ask the US imperialists for even one drop of water.

You got as much a chance of getting a drop of water as the 5,000,000 AIDS patients who died needlessly in 2007 for the lack of US-patented anti-AIDS medications that cost less than 25 cents a dose for the US imperialists to produce with their ultra-automated production techniques.

The degenerate US imperialists however charges between $11,000 and $15,000 for one year of the anti-AIDS medications, as these filthy imperialist savages babble about "Jesus will save you. Keep the faith. Don't lose hope."

This might be a solution to your problem not enough water for the capital.Start pumping water from the ocean through salt water filterered systems. There are companys that can do this now taking salt water and making into drinking water.I SUGGEST YOU LOOK INTO THIS MR. GERMAN.This would solve your problem in the SANTO DOMINGO.

oooo

If this is the case. then the degenerates who control the salt-to-fresh water technology and their cheerleaders must be true and incurable scum if they stand by every years and let tens of million of people perish from the thirst and famine consequences of the spread of deserts.

By the way, the Bush family, the political trash in the USA, is buying water resources of countries all over the world.

"In the past ten years, three giant global corporations have quietly assumed control over the water supplied to almost 300 million people in every continent of the world. A 12-month investigation by journalists in Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia and Latin America shows that the results range from questionable to disastrous. And it shows how well-meaning municipal governments in the U.S. and Canada can become vulnerable to the persuasive techniques of these high-powered corporate giants."

Listen to scum that frequents DT which either defends the capitalist exploitation of water as well as access to water or totally ignores as unimportant the question of the growing bourgeois monoplization of water.

If the DR gives its water away to US and Canadian scum, the DR doesn't deserve to drink.

The problem is, as Josean implies, priorities. This "drought" is nothing more than annual water reserve fluctuations and increasing urban water use that was supposed to be addressed by now by the Rio Haina Dam project. That is supposed to address the cities current water needs and its needs into the future of the next couple of decades. The problem; the government has spent a few million dollars on the feasiblity studies and the environmental studies needed to invest in the project but they don't have enough money to spend the $5 million remaining to do the second round of impact and engineering studies that are required by modifications necessary from doing the first round. Without those studies no international banks will offer financing to the country to build it. Not quite true, Brazilian financial institutions can offer the financing because they do not hold themselves to OECD standards. So, when it is too late and this becomes a real emergency look for Odebrecht to build.
Written by: MalditoGringo, 31 Mar 2008 9:54 AM
From: Dominican Republic
The situation is worse than they say because Santo Domingo East is getting its water from underground aquifers that, because of the lack of Rio Haina Dam they were counting on several years ago, is being over taxed. Those aquafers will reach a critical point where the negative pressure will draw sea water in and they will become salinified. Nobody is really sure when that will happen but when it happens it will be all of a sudden. (could ne this year, could be in five years....but it is going to happen unless they build that dam).

Rudy is right, there is desalination technology but it is expensive and costs a lot to run because it realies heavily on energy. (not cheap in the DR) That would translate into less money for social programs (once again).

So, in the end it is the same old story; Governments disrespectiong the State's and the Nation's strategic development plan and signing contracts to do whatever projects bennefit their short term personal interests.

"Rudy is right, there is desalination technology..."

"Water is desalinated in order to be converted to fresh water suitable for industrial consumption or irrigation, or, if almost all of the salt is removed, for human consumption. It is used on many ships and submarines. Most of the modern interest in desalination is focused on developing cost-effective ways of providing fresh water for human use in regions where the availability of water is limited."

"Large-scale desalination typically requires large amounts of energy as well as specialized, expensive infrastructure, making it very costly compared to the use of fresh water from rivers or groundwater. The large energy reserves of many Middle Eastern countries, along with their relative water scarcity, have led to extensive construction of desalination in this region. "

"Saudi Arabia's desalination plants account for about 24% of total world capacity."

These water diversion projects are so huge that they may run 15 to 30 years in construction time and cost hundreds of billions of dollars and the labor of hundreds of thousands of workers. There must be enormous facilities to capture water from various sources, canals and pipes to transport to every province of the country, truly gargantuan strategic storage capacity, and treatment things before released into local distribution systems.

The US imperialists are not leading the way for humanity, rather they are sneaking around the world using the IMF and World Bank trying to induce countries to GIVE a way their water to the imperialists. The refusal to give away the water or oil or other mineral resources to the imperialists is denounced as "resource nationalism" that obstructs free trade and the workings of market forces.

It's amazing how many fools fall for this scam.

Water Politics and Water Crisis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water#Water_politics_and_water_crisis

Water politics is politics affected by water resources. Because of overpopulation, mass consumption, misuse, and water pollution, the availability of drinking water per capita is inadequate and shrinking as of the year 2006. For this reason, water is a strategic resource in the globe and an important element in many political conflicts.

UNESCO's World Water Development Report from its World Water Assessment Program indicates that, in the next 20 years, the quantity of water available to everyone is predicted to decrease by 30%. More than 2.2 million people died in 2000 from waterborne diseases (related to the consumption of contaminated water) or drought. In 2004, the UK charity WaterAid reported that a child dies every 15 seconds from easily preventable water-related diseases.

"Ethos, a brand of bottled water acquired by Starbucks in 2005, is sold at locations throughout North America. Ethos bottles feature prominent labeling stating "helping children get clean water", referring to the fact that $.05 from each $1.80USD bottle sold ($.10 per unit in Canada) is used to fund clean water projects in under-developed areas. Critics have argued that the claim on the label misleads consumers into thinking that Ethos is primarily a charitable organization, when it is actually a for-profit Starbucks brand and the vast majority of the sale price (over 94%) does not support clean-water projects. Although sales of Ethos water has raised over $4,000,000 for clean water efforts, the brand is not a charity and has added to Starbucks revenue. The founders of Ethos have stated that the brand is intended to raise awareness of third-world clean water issues and provide socially "

The Starbucks case on clean water is similar to Venezuela, through "Citgo," giving low-income US consumers a 40% discount on their heating oil while filthy US oil companies which are happy see poor US citizens freeze in winter complain that Citgo still makes a profit despite the 40% discount.

Then, rotten and affluent US reactionaries jumb on and beat up Citgo, but these reactionaries keep the lousy mouths shut when Bear Stearn gets a big discount so its top exec can keep getting over $100 million a year in their compensation packages.

Are you sure that we are not falling for some sort of April fools joke by engaging this twat in conversation?!?

Belial; are u using babblefish to translate what we say here & what you write back because you don't seem to even understand correctly the insults I have enjoyed throwing at you. Are you aware that your screen name means "worth nothing" even in its most benign interpretation. (benign means most simple or most unoffensive...I figure your babblefish might have problems with that word.

Note: babble fish does not work for mathematics so stop plugging numbers into it and expecting a point. 1) you can not just take Geman's statement of 400 million gals /day, divide that by 24 hours in a day, and multiply that by two (as your interpretation of a "couple") of hours to calculate how many gals aren't arriving a the city....that's what you did isn't it ?!?
Written by: MalditoGringo, 1 Apr 2008 7:36 PM

2) Calculating % drop of "to 35 million [] to 95 million" you do by subtracting 35 from 95 and dividing that sum by 95....you'll get something closer to 60% of a drop.

If you have doubts wait until you reach grade 8 in your GED studies and ask your tutor.

Much ado about a username, are you another one of those experts on ancient and lying Zionist propaganda about divine beings.

OK, I'll play your childish game.

Juan Morel Campos, (1857-1896), composed his tragic and beautiful danza, ""Maldito Amor" about the love of the damned for the damned.

MalditoGringo, are you in love, too? Is she or he or it so abominable that you are judged damned, that is, condemned forever? Or is she or it or he condemned forever because of their relationship with you?

Perhaps, you are possessed by the Brazilian novel Canto dos Malditos (The Song of the Damned) (1972), by Curitibano Austregésilo Carrano Bueno, about the anguish of a son whose father unjustly commits his son to the nuthouse.

MalditoGringo, are you writing from the nuthouse? In your case, your dad was right to put you away.

Anyway, if you are among the damned, then how can you change the topic from water ever for one second?
